I'm moving to Manly, Whangaparaoa this weekend. I'm currently with Orcon but after today's poorly handled 20 hour outage I'm thinking of switching ISPs.

What would people recommend as the best performing ISP in Whangaparaoa? Fibre is not available there so VDSL is best.

I need 100gb+ or unlimited. A phone line but I don't mind if it's VOIP. Speed is important but even more important is reliability and good customer service.

What do others on the peninsula use? Would appreciate recommendations ASAP as I'm moving soon and would need to order the connection right away.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Im in Stanmore Bay on VDSL with V/fone at 40/10 - been pretty good (except the router but thats another story on here). But Im pretty close to a cabinet which helps.

Some areas of Manly still dont get VDSL afaik.... so have you confirmed its available ?

If you want stable then worry about the house wiring not the ISP

Yes I've confirmed VDSL is available at my address. I already have an order for it with my current ISP. Just wondering if there's someone better than Orcon I should go with instead.

I couldnt agree more with this

An isp is an isp really

if you don't call the help desk they are bascially all the same.

how far are you from the cabinet/exchange

For those who are suggesting checking home wiring, is there anything I can do on this myself? What am I looking for? Or does it need to be tested by a sparky? The house was built in late 80's and I assume has mostly original wiring.

If a VDSL install is done then make sure a VDSL master filter is installed at the same time, Most but no all retail service providers will cover the install cost of one

If you get ADSL2+ then a master filter is not installed by default and then up to the house owner @coffeebaron here on Geekzone does a top job of installing them

This is something installed in the house or at the exchange?

So when the Chorus guy is there I can just ask him about it or is it something I need to request in advance?

If you request a VDSL install I know most retail ISPs get one installed by default, You don't need to request one it just happens and I know it does for Vodafone customers and most other ISPs but not all

Back to my original question: Are there any ISP's who stand out as outperforming others specifically on Whangaparaoa? Does the local network in that area have much to do with it or will any ISP who covers the region offer the same thing?
