So then you just need to wait for the install date

Benek:

But requesting it nearly 1 month in advance and getting such a late install date is a bit weird though, right?

Nope, it's perfectly normal. Jobs and scheduling can change on a daily basis.

Two service orders also can't be lodged on a line concurrently. Your new install can't be lodged until the old one is cancelled.

You can't avoid this and install dates can change / pushed out as well

You need to make a backup plan - rent some short term office space, use an internet cafe, tether to your phone, etc. You can't move a corporate. They don't care. If you're looking to blame someone it's probably your ISP getting the order in late, but blame doesn't help.

sbiddle: Have you established why this is? If you're moving to a new premises my pick would be the disconnection service order is on the date you're moving in, or possibly the day before. This means a new service order for a connection can't be lodged until the disconnection has occurred.

Assuming this is the case just be thankful the people moving out have actually requested a disconnection - is when they don't you'll really start to see delays.

You may also want to ask Orcon to confirm with Chorus that the people moving out have indeed requested a disconnection. We experienced a lengthy delay in getting our connection activated, because the previous tenants had not arranged for a disconnection.

Very valid point maybe the people that live in the house now have not requested disconnection until the date Chorus have provided

If you trust the people that currently have the connection.

Couldn't the op just ask the current owners to transfer the account over into his name? Avoiding Internet connection downtime?

You wont be able to do anything about Chorus.  Just be glad you are not getting UFB or it would be many times worse, and you would think the corrent response is wonderful.  Get yourself a 3G card, teather to your iPhone, or find a temporary place to work.

The oher thing to keep in mind is that util the service is activated there is always the chance you *wont* be able to get VDSL, and you'll have to start again asking for something else.

Unfortunately no matter how far in advance you book an xDSL install, Chorus cannot actually schedule that work until the current/previous connection at the property is fully disconnected. If the previous occupier is slow to arrange their own move/disconnection, or they book it for a few days after they move out (happens a LOT), Chorus cannot bring this forward without agreement from the outgoing occupant and/or their RSP.

Once the intact is clear (as we say in the trade), only then are Chorus able to book a tech for your connection, based on tech availability as of that date. A 5 day leadtime sounds about right in my experience however I have seen waits of up to 2 weeks in this scenario.

This is the way it has always been, and is legislated as such. No provider gets preferential treatment over another, so there is no queue jumping in any scenario except medical dependence. I have only ever seen one case in 7 years where someone was medically dependent on broadband, and even then it was tenuous at best.

Had you requested an ADSL connection with no site visit required, Chorus could have connected it the day following disconnection of the previous line. Once the ADSL is working, you then call your provider back and request an upgrade to VDSL. This way, at least you have ADSL service while waiting for a VDSL install tech to visit.

The views expressed by me are not necessarily those of my employer Chorus NZ Ltd

And please DON'T do this now. Once Chorus are in motion, leave them in motion.

I've seen posts here on where people have tried changing install dates and stuff around; e.g. one that comes to mind was a VDSL install not going to plan, so changed back to ADSL, a day later internet stopped... In the end it would have been quicker for original plan to run it's course.

I think people need to get the mindset out of their head that UFB always takes months to install. It doesn't.

Yes there are plenty of nightmare stories out there with MDUs and shared drvieways and I have to deal with them on a daily basis, but if you're in a residential dwelling that has no access issues (ie the vast majority of residential premises) you'll easily get an install within 1-2 weeks after submitting an order.

I got my UFB at home a few weeks ago. Had it not been for the fact I was away for a week on holiday I could have booked the scoping for 2 days after I submitted my order, and then could have booked the install for the following week.

As it turned out with my holiday I booked a scoping for a Friday a couple of week later, had the civil team turn up the following Tuesday and Wednesday to trench the front yard and install the ETP, and had the ONT install on the Friday. That was 7 days from scoping to install. There was nothing special about my job, it was just a stock standard residential install. Had my house been an overhead leadin rather than underground I could have probably even shaved a few days off that.

The only thing I would say with UFB, is if you can, be prepared. Pre-Drill holes and run draw wires if you want a nice tidy install, otherwise put up with a surface mount install. Make the Chorus tech's job easy, it's you that has to live in the place after all.
