Noodles: International has been really slow today on Xtra. The network status page mentions some sort of problem, but doesn't elaborate as most Xtra customers wouldn't understand anything techinical.

This was on the Xtra network status page Yesterday (but has since been removed)

Severe weather impacts International web and data access:

A hurricane force storm battering Washington State, Oregon and parts of Northern California since yesterday is believed to have damaged an onshore section of the Southern Cross Cable Network. This means that access to some websites may be slow or difficult until the weather and flooding clears and work crews in the US are able to make repairs.

Speed to UK seems to be decreased. No change to other city.

I believe the Mayoral Drive to San Jose bearer has been temporarily repaired and should be fixed permanently in the next few days. The traffic will still be shaped in the meantime.

Think you will find the cable is only from Hawaii to the continental US. Rather temping fate to have one cable from San Jose directly to Mayoral Drive.

KiwiOverseas66: great link! Does anyone know what cables these providers are actually sitting on? From what I recall - there is TAS1 and 2 between NZ and Oz, then there is PacRim East from NZ to the US, and PacRim West from Oz to the US, and then there is Southern Cross. Is that it? (aside from satelitte capacity of course).

So Global gateway is Southern Cross. Presumably AT&T would be using Southern Cross as well? Telstra would be using TAS1 and PacRim West (since they own TAS1 I think). Would AsiaNet be using Southern Cross as well - dating back to when it was part of Asia Global Crossing/ WorldCom days?

Just trying to get an idea of who would be affected if say - there is a problem with SX since ISPs might be with different tier 1 providers, but does that mean they're on differnet cables? From the looks of Barry's map - it appears alot of the tier 2 telcos/ ISPs have redundant links - (A+ for good network planning). Just wondering.

I think it's a reasonable statement that "All NSPs into NZ will use Southern Cross".

Tasman 1 is dead. Tasman 2 is also a limited capacity cable (but afaik still lit). Pacrim West is also a limited capacity cable and would never meet Telstra's requirements for bandwidth. Pacrim East is now basically 100% TNZ (again an exceptionally limited capacity cable).

Some of the larger NSPs (ANC, MCI/Verizon, Telstra, et al) may have capacity on SMW3 and AJC out of Australia as well as Southern Cross; but as a general statement all Tier 1s in NZ will be riding Southern Cross unless they're backtracking via Australia.

Of course, this shows which tier 1s are buying protected capacity and which are not; and those who have enough diverse capacity if not buying protected paths. *cough*.

I can confirm the end points are correct as stated in the telecom notification although it was referred to as a network bearer.
