Something I did notice, when using speedtest is all speedtests are averaged out, and that average is used for the comparisons...

Where some off us, like myself, drag down our own average by doing speedtests over our home wi-fi connection, and when we have been throttled....

If you only do a tests when your using your premium connection (pc connected to router via ethernet/adsl2 at full throttle), you will acheive the highest possible average and rank well.....seems logical, but many people would not realise this, hence they drag down their own results/averages, meaning the other regions/countrys results may not be entirely accurate...

If I did my speedtest over my ethernet connection...I would average around 4mbps, to what I've noticed....but as I use wi-fi alot and do speedtests over that, I average a stink 400-800kbps over wi-fi.....so my overall average is the average of all those results.

Indeed - this is the highest I've ever got off a DSL based connection

Well, if you want to rely on speedtest's statistics, you're probably the sort of person who thinks that internet polls actually reflect reality.

Anyway, from speedtest.net:

NZ: 2581 kbps

Compared to:
Australia: 3934
Sweden: 7788
Romania: 6085
Russia: 4787
Bulgaria: 5230
Lithuania: 4648

Nope. Because not all New Zealanders do not do speedtests on their connection. In my experience the only people who do are technically aware or gamers - who typically have relatively good speeds and may skew the results.

Ah, thank you for reinforcing my thoughts on page 1. Still, you might be able to substitute any nationality into your aforementioned sentence, which means that the comparisons between countries probably still are valid. For my 2c on broadband overseas, which is limited to US only, in a little place in New Jersey with a population of 9300, over an hour away from any city, I was getting 11000kbps coming down from LA, and 800kbps up. Compare that with barely 2500kbps down from Auckland to Christchurch I'm getting at the moment. Sure there're many mitigating factors, but this sort of connection I experienced in New Jersey seemed to be something Joe average could afford, and locality didn't seem to be a problem.

Yes. There are always going to be exceptions - there are also cases in the US where the lack of choice means poor performing broadband or only one provider (slashdot is a good source for this).

I had a similar situation in China where I had full speed national but virtually only 50kbps-120kbps to major overseas regions.
