In Nelson the situation seems to be that Transfield deal directly with retail customers, not via the ISP. Transfield rang direct to organise scoping, re-scoping install etc.

We have never ever heard from Spark throughout the entire process. Not a peep. It is probably more efficient that way. At least it would be if Transfield communicated better ...

You should ask your ISP why they didn't advise you of the date earlier. Chorus ringing the day before to schedule the time is a BAU process to remind the person and schedule an exact time, because the person who requested the install should already know the date from their ISP. As you seemed to be pushing to get the job done ASAP it's entirely possible that your job was expedited or swapped out for another, which could also explain the short notice.

If you are on a 200/20 connection you should be getting something close to what is in my signature, not WAY under.

Gigabit card in the laptop, gigabit switch with cat-6 cables and router is the HG659 a supplied by Spark so shouldn't be any issues.

But hey it's a one off test.

And whatever the numbers say the internet is qualitatively better to use.

Importantly VPN connection to my workserver is much, much better than ADSL. That was my main bugbear and motivation for UFB.

Teenage boy reports much less lag for playing MMO games.

What server(s) did you speed test? Have you tried nPerf (Auckland server)?

61/14 is WAY too slow, and you are being much too laid-back about this.

The time to complain is now, when your ISP is most likely to listen to you.

Not sure what server I tested to. I just googled for NZ based speed tests and used the first one I found that didn't need flash or for me to register to use it. I can't remember what the website was.

There was a reference on the test log to a server located in Napier (I'm in Nelson).

Flash is clearly required in this case but would give you a better idea..

The move to HTML5 testing platforms is nice, but Speedtest.net is the only one with servers within nz off the top of my head. Speedtest.net beta is HTML5, but thats still a closed(ish) beta.

Spark also have Zeus in Auckland, It does offer a raw 450MB file to download as a test if your after something without flash, Clearly this only covers downloads though. http://zeus.jetstream.co.nz/450M.bin

As always, Test Using a hard-wired, to your router with network load clear and ofcourse, not using a potato to browse the internets..

Remember that you are testing a very high-speed connection.

Some test servers are (much) slower than 200Mbps - which makes them useless for testing your connection.

I'm on a 100Mbps cable connection, and the only non-Flash testing server that I know is http://speedof.me/ which gives much lower speed results that nPerf or speedtest.net - which require Flash.

speedof.me can do over 100 megabit. your isp probably just has bad routing.

Speedtest and nperf both show line speeds to Australia, which is where i assume speedofme is based on the ping, but speedofme shows 1/2 to 2/3rd my line speed.

TBH at the moment i dont think its a very accurate speed test service

In the end put the ONT in an office cupboard, which is handy.

Network guy coming on Wednesday to rearrange the wired network a bit.

Everything should be pretty sweet after that.

Lounge AV, Bedroom TV and Office will all be hard wired in.

jonb: Mike, what was the solution to your install in the end? Where did you decide to put the ONT etc?
