Yes, the ONT requires 240v power.

I told him i wanted the ont where the current vdsl master filter is so he can just plug the existing cat6 wire into the ont which leads straight to my router

Depending where your master filter is, that's probably not going to be possible. The master filter is a small, passive device. The ONT is about the size of a residential router, needs power, to be indoors, and adequate ventilation.

Ok so he is wrong that I'm not allowed to put my router where i want it? Ie where it currently sits? Currently the Setup is
Master filter-> Cat6 wire -> wall Jack -> short cat6 wire -> router.

Can I - Splice the end of the cat6 that currently sits in the master filter and pull it to the ont.

He specifically said no to cat6. Couldn't find the fibre duct outside the house. Didn't know how to get the fibre into the house. Insisted the router the beside the ont. Etc

you can put the router where you want it.

there are restrictions/linitations where you can put the ONT and how much cabling they are like to include to connect the ONT to the router

After the install's done you can indeed cable from the ONT to where you want the router. Or you could have this cabling ready to go when they do the install. What they won't do is provide cabling between ONT and Router as part of the basic install.

Ok good. I already have the cable. It's my vdsl master filter to Jack cable. All they need to do is shorten it and splice it.

He also doesn't know how to get the fibre to the house. Something like force it between some cracks on the pathway. Maybe i should bring out my SLR and my video camera to record the work.

The cable that is used to bring the fibre from the FTB (Fibre termination Box ) - normaly positioned around or near the copper ETP (External Test Point) has both Copper and Fibre in it. The fibre section is used to bring the fibre connection through to the ONT and the copper section is for taking 'Voice services' from either the ONT ATA ports or the Router ATA ports, via a patch cord and a RJ45 Jkpt, and back-feeding your existing house wireing at the ETP.

If you want to have your router in a differnt location to the ONT, and your ISP provides Voice services via the Router and not the ONT, then you need to have two cables (with RJ45 Jkpts at either end) if you wish to use your existing BT jkpts for your voice. All this extra cableing is not part of the Chorus standard install.

Reusing the CAT6 that has been installed from the ETP to your VDSL RJ45 Jkpt to on feed your Router is an option but again repurposing this is not part of the standard install and any associated work will be changed to your ISP (and on to you) if they allow the work in the first place

The additional work is know as WYAH (while you are here) and only a few ISP allow it.

Hmm ... He didn't say moving the copper costs me money. My isp is spark and yes I've asked for a phone line.

GeekRay: Since we are talking about the ONT box, can someone enlighten me if the box needs good ventilation to keep operating properly? Does it run hot when connected (100/20)?

I am trying to find out if it's OK to have it installed in a closed space where ventilation isn't the most ideal but leaves the box out-of-sight. Thanks

The Chorus ONT does generate heat and needs reasonable ventilation - it has to be mounted verticaly to allow for convection ventiation through the case across the circuity. 300mm clearance is a good rule of thumb. but meany a mounted in tighter spaces (domestic comms boxes etc) without issues - yet :-)

- I have had to replace one that was mounted in a coms rack horizontaly that had significant browning of the case and was suffering from heat stress.

The FTB is just for your connection only and goes on the outside of your House. It is the point where the fibre 'cabling' from the roadside connects to the fibre cabling run to the ONT.

He wouldnt have as you dont need to give you a standard install - but if you want to get any additional work on your existing copper (repurpose a Cat6 etc), move jkpts or add additional network cableing then that costs.

Spark dont allow WYAH so they couldnt do the repurposeing anyway.
Your Voice will then be delivered off the ONT and back feed to the ETP and connected to the existing 'Legacy' House wireing all as part of the standard install

You will be having a similar install to me. Fibre cable to ONT in the garage. Then Cat 6 cable under house to Router in lounge. The phone port in the ONT is connected to where the old phone cable entered the property (where your current master filter is located) to switch house phone wiring from copper to fibre.

Cat6 part from Router to ONT may be at your own cost. You could always just temporarily have the HG858 next to ONT to allow a successful install to be ticked off, and then sort the eventual location of the router yourself afterwards.
