Yeah, the Krapi Cable thread is somewhat worrying, but that being said, in off peak times still seems to perform marvelously. I have the ability to schedule the majority of my internet use to happen outside of peak times so this doesn't worry me *too* much.

Yes, cable is great during daylight hours.  Usually.  wink

You might be able to get one of the Vodafone type people floating around to check with 100% certainty on the availability of cable.

It *really* annoys me when people think dsl should be cheaper than anything else because its slower.

Just because its slower doesnt mean it costs less to provide.

Yeah, fair point. I can understand that there are overheads there that need to be covered.

I just can't believe how ADSL is still the same price as UFB. Dial up was a whole lot cheaper than ADSL when that became more prevalent. Perhaps this will happen at some point with ADSL too.

There was a lot of talk not all that long ago about the cost of data for the end user. You want more data, you pay more money. There's no way an ADSL connection could use anywhere near the amount of data a UFB connection could theoretically use. And due to the plan cost being similar, the overdeads and maintenance costs for a UFB plan must be significantly less than copper. Right? That's really what it seems to come down to.

They /could/ make it like how they have it for 3G/4G. Instead of paying for the service/speed, you just pay for the data that you use.

But then again, if ADSL is the only thing available to you, they can make the price as much or as little as they want, as they have absolute authority. Welcome back to New Zealand reality!

Who knows, like people say, maybe ADSL is more expensive to keep running than Fibre.

DSL line rental costs your ISP 41.19+GST while UFB30 costs 38.50+GST, with that kind of input cost you can't expect DSL to be cheaper than fibre. Data costs doesn't factor that much in an ISP's costs. Also remember, the government is subsidizing UFB rollout with billions of our dollars.

Its not that ADSL is expensive.

Its that UFB is cheap.

UFB is massively subsidised by the government and the entire point was to stimulate demand for UFB by making it about the same price as copper - which is exactly what happened.

fior fixed line,  the cost of the data used to be a very big deal but is now only a very small component of the cost of the broadband. With so much content now being hosted in NZ or Australia,  the international component of ISPs is so much smaller than it used to be - which is why we see so many more unlimited data plans than we used to, and for only a little bit more money than a capped plan.

That's as absurd as those people on trademe that expect things to be cheap to courier just because they are cheap items.

The Krapi thread is old and now out of date.  To see the history of cable performance since then check here: https://truenet.nz/isp-performance-trend

Vodafone solved the issue that started when Netflix started by installing new equipment, at great expense.  Since the October cutover Cable has hardly missed a beat, performing better than it did before the event for both 50 and 100Mb/s connections.

John, this is true for most cable users, but the Krapi cable thread (now 134 pages long!) is now largely focused on Island Bay, which still has very significant problems.

To the best of my knowledge, I am the only TrueNet cable volunteer in Island Bay.

Here are my downstream stats for last week:

For those unfamiliar with TrueNet stats, the black line with the sharp evening speed dip is my own 100/10Mbps cable connection.

The "almost perfect" horizontal blue line represents other TrueNet volunteers elsewhere in Wellington.

My peak hour speeds (at aprx. 9pm) remain in the 10-20Mbps range (19Mbps on this graph) on a 100Mbps connection.

All of my "cable" neighbours have exactly the same problem.

An upgrade to the Island Bay "node" is pending, but has been repeatedly delayed.

Have you looked at this company for pricing. All comes from Chorus copper.

I hadn't noticed.  We tend to view the median as a representative of most people.

In your case, looking closer, you do have an issue, but it is not a strong case for all of Island Bay, we do have another panelist in Island Bay which shows a smaller drop in the evening to about 87Mb/s, while yours is down to 50Mb/s.  There may be more than one node in Island Bay.

Welcome to the club. Can't get cable and UFB is slated June 2018. And not holding my breath for them putting that in eventually (See UFB money is already gone). Just switched to VDSL (2d) and get 2u/16d (double of ADSL) because I am so far from the cabinet. So that will need to bridge me to 2018.

dial up wasn't really that much cheaper once you count the line rental, and couple that with the fact that you can't use the line for anything else - so in some cases people had to get two POTS lines + the dial up service. not cheap at all.
