I am no a 100Mb unlimited Fibre Plan with 2Degrees.
My national speeds are good,

Sydney

BUT when I test my laptop over Wifi

Which is maxing out the Wifi.

I have turned off the firewall but still slow, Any tips on where, how and what I should look at?
Running windows7.
Would upgrading to Windows 10 fix/reset the setting?

And why would you test speedtest over WiFI if yourself says "maxing out"? Don't bother with that.

I still think it is something on your network.

The laptop has wifi and gives max possible speed to LAX that wifi can do and it's 4 times faster than what my desktop computer can do which has a 1GB network connection.

It's odd it can get full speed to NZ and OZ but any further away the speeds on the desktop drop to the 14Mb speed.

I turned off the firewall and it made no difference. So I'm trying to google what setting could effect the speeds like this.

Have you checked if your router has a "green" settings which makes ports connect at 100Mbps instead of 1Gbps? Or perhaps the laptop has? Or a switch somewhere (if you use these)?

It's my computer Sorceror, but thanks for the test helps.

Mauricio, I'd disabled the green setting on my computers network adapter and the Fritzbox didn't have it enabled.

I've tried both Chrome and Opera to see if it was a browser setting and no change.

Do you think upgrading to win 10 would help fix this mystery issue?

plug your laptop into the ethernet cable thats normally connected to the computer and test again, that will prove what speeds you can get on your connection over ethernet. if its the same as your PC then the issue is with the router, if its full speed on that then its an issue with your PC

so the issue is on your PC then aye

and looks like your laptop is only connected to the router at 100mbps

My internet plan is 100Mb :) but yes, it's the desktop than causes issues when connecting to places further than australia.

test to a local server with your laptop over the Ethernet cable and see what you get

interesting as to what it could be

have you tried to overtune your desktop? turned window scaling off? high load on the system?

What OS is your desktop currently running?

I tried a local server with the test and I get the 105Mb speed, because I'm on the 100Mb plan.

@hio77 the computer with practically no load gets these results. If it was a load issue the desktop would not get 100Mb to NZ and OZ.

I have in the past tweaked my system when I was on ADSL to try and improve it but it was a wiring issue.

I just did;
ipconfig /flushdns
nbtstat -R
nbtstat -RR
netsh int ipv4 reset
netsh int ipv6 reset
netsh winsock reset

No change.

Try remove and reinstall the network card, then try log in as a completely new user, then perhaps also check you didn't ' tweak' your packet size when on ADSL?

Are you sure you have not network managing programs? Have you tried testing with your firewall off?

Failing that, win7 and above have a 'system reset' recovery mode which should keep all document but wipe all customisation a to the system files. BACKUP FIRST if going that far.

Also, if you do end up going to Win10 (no regrets doing so from me!) be sure to do the BACKUP and install it 'fresh' as a clean install, not upgrade, as this should set it up as a 'new' machine.

Fixed it. TCP Optimizer did the magic, may connection speed there was set to 14Mb and after changing it to 100Mb it goes fine.

Still I am still thinking about upgrading to win10, especially with the new BASH stuff.

Thanks to everyone for posts speeds and tips, it really helped me to workout where the problem was.
