I have read the Chorus post about why we don't get full speed on a speed test, but they also said that the overheard should only reduce the speed by 7% http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=136800

And so ISP seems to have a bottleneck that means any single connection beyond Australia is limited to 14Mb on a 100Mb connection, which is way more than 7% and is like 86%.

I would like to know, is that normal with all NZ ISPs?

I can do a speedtest to the USA to a city and ISP of a friend and get 14Mb, but he, with identical windows7 machine can get 100Mb speedtest to my nearest city. Which make me think it's something the southern cross cable is doing to outbound data.

It just seems odd and really feels like an artificial cap. /rant

I use a few services that use a single connection and so the ability to have multiple to get to the 100Mb doesn't help.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

  • you have reset your modem and router
  • your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
  • your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
  • you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

  • Your ISP and plan
  • Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
  • Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
  • Your general location (or street)
  • If you are rural or urban
  • If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
  • If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
  • If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

why did you not just ask a mod to move your other thread for you?

who is your ISP?

Im on VDSL with spark and get line speed to the west coast of the USA, Singapore and all of Australia

highly doubt any isp puts a 14mbps cap on downloads to anywhere

I didn't think to ask a MOD to do that and thanks for the VDSL speed info.

Try Los Angeles with OOKLA and nPerf

Right now I'm getting 60 - 80 Mbps with VF 100/10 Mbps cable

I've lost count of the number of times I've explained why speedtest.net is not necessarily a good way to measure speed, especially speed to somewhere outside of your ISP network. It's too tiring.

Just re-read your OP. It's not Southern Cross.

nPref is getting better speeds than OOKLA but I guess it's using more than a single connection.

Thanks SideFace

Talkiet why can it be so fast in the other direction, I would have expected the speed to the USA to be closer to 60Mb than 14Mb dues to the layer overheads and latency.

Take a guess how many threads the ookla tests use... Then take a guess as to how much of the data the ookla tests throw away before giving you a result (hint, they throw away more low results than high results).

Your apparent premise that Ookla uses a single connection is utterly flawed. And if you've made an assumption that all speedtest servers are suitable for testing high bandwidth services, or they are all configured the same way, then you should examine those assumptions too.

As for why you're 'only' seeing 13-14Mbps? I have no idea. That's not fair actually, I have many ideas... but none that I think are easy to troubleshoot remotely. Speak to your ISP.

Cheers - N

And first, try this SPECIFIC speedtest.net server... I've found it to be more reliable than most (except ours of course!)

I am using the same ISP as you, but fibre:

Perhaps it's something else then because I am not seeing that slow speed. Now, could be the target server? Could be the network transit inside the USA (and why didn't you test to LAX which is the closes point to where the SX cable lands?)

Could be your own network at some point during the day?

Can you test against 2degrees servers instead to see the actual network speed to the ISP?

when i had my 70/10 VDSL, i would get that consistently over single threads all the way to Netherlands. Same went for LAX (this is testing based on direct tests between home and my personal servers)

You need to remember speedtest.net use different threading counts depending on many things.

https://support.speedtest.net/hc/en-us/articles/203845400-How-does-the-test-itself-work-How-is-the-result-calculated-

When i first saw your post, i assumed you were testing to a location you had full control of things rather than speedtests applets where logic plays a huge role.

Here is my test to the WebNX server

And to Sydney - Almost line speed

And to San Francisco

So im getting much faster speeds than you as well and im on a retail fibre plan. Also @hellonearthisman what speed fibre plan are you on? or are you on VDSL?

Are you sure you don't have a firewall or a content filter running? Either in your computer or router?  That might be causing the slowdown? Take your computer to the friends house. Or ask him to bring his one over to your house to test. If you disable any firewalls for testing, remember to immediately re enable them when you have finished testing.
