Where is the Stuff Nation post about this... I feel let down somehow. It's been a source of amusement across the office today.

We really should have a sticky on the memorable fibre installs thread @freitasm http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=194910

And only have posts with photos kept in the thread.

A useful person from chorus called me today so they could get it sorted out.

The original installers had gone back and removed the cable which cut off the telephone line.

I found out the original installers from Downers did not speak very good english.
They did not communicate the issues very well, if at all.
 - The duct under the driveway only had space for one cable, it could not fit both
 - They did not offer the option of replacing it with hybrid fiber+copper which is the same size, would have fit in the duct and allowed both services to operate, the chorus rep did confirm this was an option to them
 - Friends visiting at the time of the install also had a hard time understanding what the installers were trying to say and were also not of the impression that the phone cable would be left out, or that the landline phone would be cut off.

Another Downer guy came out to fix the issue this afternoon. He explained the problem with the duct but also did not offer to install hybrid cable.

He also didnt carry any cable in his van so he offered to come back tomorrow. I had some outdoor cat5 in my van so I gave him some so he didnt need to make another visit.

The end solution has been to port the line to IP and leave the cat5 cable as the one pictured until the porting takes place.

The taradale exchange does not have SPOT services so I was able to convince our staff member / end user that changing to an IP phone would mean she can get caller ID although the alarm needs an IP dialer installed - which one of our other staff are able to install.
