I would be willing to bet it was a BNG shaper put in place in the 997 days. It's just a little odd downstream limitation as full speed 997 was 71mbit. And I saw a number of lines that somehow managed to sync at that rate.
Now with 998 I see a number of 102/49 lines.

In some ways it's sad to move ISPs just because of 10mbit you weren't able to get. I would doubt in real world experience your parents would not even notice.
But in principle with their response I agree moving is the right thing to do.
I wonder if they are going to offer GB UFB plans... With the 200/200 shaper in place.

That would be the 30/10 shaper ;-)

WXC offers a maximum 30Mbps downstream / 10Mbps Upstream for UFB

i would say the 'user experience' would totally depend on their queuing when pegged out, most likely that extra 10mbit would be huge at that point.

Remember its a 50/20 sharper they have on it, which doesnt match 997 at all. My first thought was 997 too, but 20 up would be a pointless amount to shape on back in those days.

Just an update from this. I have churned the line to Voyager and it went through really smoothly. VoIP + VDSL working perfect.

I also gained a bit of an improvement to the general connection. Now syncing 81Mbit down, 15Mbit up with the new Zyxel router. Speedtests are also showing a solid 79Mbit down, 14.8Mbit up and the general performance of their connection has vastly improved.

A complaint has been laid to the Commerce Commission after WXC (Vodafone Next Generation) failed to reply to any communications after saying the line is limited. They've had zero contact to me at all. I've been incredibly impressed with Voyager and their customer service so hopefully it stays that way.

Overall - a bad outcome for WXC however an excellent outcome for my parents who are on a better, and cheaper product then what they were on.

Still appears to be 8b - I'd assume that DLM might improve the line over time.

That was my goal when I rewired their house ;)

Here is the cabinet in relation to their house. You can see the "Equipment Shed" in this case from their house. Also, there is thicker copper cables due to being rural which likely helps.
