i seem to be very popular with the russian ladies but i have it set up in thunderbird and the junk settings make sure i dont see most of it and it is quite fun to see the effort people go through to get your interest and money.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I still have an xtra email account, in addition to a gmail account.

I got the gmail account about five years ago when I got my first Android phone. But I have almost 30 years of business and personal contacts in ten countries that have the xtra address. I lost a lot of people's contact details when an old PC died and, while I've managed to track down most of them, keeping the xtra account is my best chance of any contact with soe of those people again. I also signed up for a lot of websites and services over the years using the xtra email address. It's just too much bother to ditch it.

All that said, I haven't used the yahoo/xtra or gmail apps for a while. My email accounts are linked to my Outlook.co.nz account and I use Outlook on my PC, notebook and phone through my Office 365 subscription. And when I meet new people I give them my Outlook email address now.

The problem with a gmail address is that if Google ever do anything unpopular or controversial that affects their users' privacy or the quality of service then you have no comeback because you're not paying for the service.

I have a gmail account that I use as a throwaway address for when I'm filling out surveys or competitions so that I can keep my main address free of marketing rubbish. My main address is my own domain name, forwarding to whatever email service provider I happen to want to use at the time.

While true, it's just not viable for the everyman to have his own domain just for e-mail, like I find it highly unjustifiable. I'd rather just stick to my personal account + whatever my employer gives me.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

Im on the free google apps which they no longer offer. $10 a year for a domain name is nothing. People are paying $5 a month to ISPs just to keep on with an email address that isnt even theirs.

I think borrowing an email address on a domain that isnt yours is more unjustifiable if you plan to actually use it where people will put it into CRM systems and address books.

costs 5$ per user now for the basic pack now but still really is pocket change..

Depends what you're after. There are plenty of places where you can get a .com for under US$5 in the first year and ~US$10 in the following years. If you want something even cheaper you can get a .co normally for a few US dollars per year.

A .co.nz is available from NZ$19.95 per year

My personal ihug account still active after 18 years.
The lycos webmail account is 17 years old.

(Gmail account created with first android phone 2009 while business account 3 years off own domain)

I was guilty of hanging on to a paradise email for far to long

Got my own domain now , it works out way cheaper than the old option of being tied to paying to keep an email address when moving isp providers

I've still got my xtra address - I've had it since long before Gmail existed and so many people and organisations have it that the task of informing them all of a change seems just too hard. If I want to look professional I use my own business's email address. I have a Yahoo address that I use to sign up for random websites, and a Gmail one I use for US stuff like my Hulu Plus account.
