I see most of the postings are about traffic use. Using 2tb let alone 500gig is an amazing amount. For me traffic is not the problem. A heavy use for me would not take me over 100gig in a month. There's only 2 people in this household. I'm just wanting cheaper but a reliable connection & being on fibre that shouldn't be a issue these days with any provider you would think.

I've taken the plunge & sent an application in to Unlimited Internet with the same conditions I have now but $20 cheaper a month. Not a lot but over time it adds up.

As of June Chorus said the national average was up to 100GB/month, and it was predicting 170GB by June 2017. We all know the top users are orders of magnitude higher than that average. I'd have thought most flats would hit a couple of TB/month these days. 100 down / 20 up would top out at a theoretical max of over 30TB a month. 2TB is a tiny measly 6.66% of that. Let alone the new 1000/500 plans.

Based on visibility of a substantial proportion of the BB connections in NZ, a couple of TB/month is wildly, fantastically, massively above average... (Yes, Spark customers aren't the same as Orcon customers, and Bigpipe customers are different again etc)... But I'm basing my assertion on hundreds of thousands of users.

At the other end of the scale we have Ma and Pa using 2-5GB per month whilst on a gigabit connection.

Yep. That's my folks in Dunedin. They basically use gigabit to check there email and Skype.

What surprises me is there are many threads out there (recent threads too) of people asking about Unlimited Internet and despite all the negative about them they still chose to go with them based on price. If you're thinking of joining them and ask - and ignore the feedback regarding them then there is no point in starting up (yet another) thread.

You get what you pay for and to be perfectly honest I'd rather spend that little bit extra to be on a network not run by a loose cannon who can kick you with both little warning and no real reason like what we've seen.

I'd expect Spark to have the lowest overall average usage simply because it's kind of the default mum & dad ISP. I can't see a flat full of students signing up to Spark for instance.

i was with them for about 2 years. moved to 2degrees after a bad help desk call with them. guy was very rude and not at all helpful. so i thought, bugger them and switched.

But, having said that, if it wasn't for that one help desk person, I'd still be with them. I wouldnt really judge an entire company on one person (it pissed me off enough at the time to switch, and the fact I had to wait the weekend for them to open again on monday to make the support call).

On ADSL2+ my speeds were good, never had any issues with them. When I moved and needed support, the monday - friday 9-4pm (or whatever their hours are), was a PITA and yeah, great if you dont actually need support (which lets face it, 99% of the time you dont).

Did the online registration with Unlimited Internet on Wed 9th
Just this afternoon I go my VDSL enabled

Was quite a battle to get Chorus to put VDSL on, they were all against it at first but today installer came round at set it up

Chorus weren't very keen to setup VDSL as they recon that my house was on 15db Attenuation only 10db or lower are connected
My modem was seeing 19db Attenuation BUT my connection speed was 24mbps/880kbps, down is as fast as ADSL2+ goes
I was pretty sure that VDSL was possible
Unlimited was only provider where my address had VDSL2 on address checker, so took the plunge.

Unlimited support was great they went out of their way to get what I wanted and not just what was easiest for them
This made the issue with their website not working 100% in the registration process forgivable (adding phone to VDSL account doesn't bring up phone setup page)

VDSL works very well with >10db attenuation and if you think VDSL will work, push and don't take no for an answer
My modem now reports VDSL2 attenuation as 23db
Getting 41Mbps down, 7.7Mbps up

Once I get my voip/phone transferred over from 2Degrees I'll be chuffed.
