I've been speaking with Bigpipe about getting a DSL connection and they report my address is currently connected to a cabinet around 5km's away. As I mentioned previously, there is a new cabinet some 800m up the road but Chorus tell me that can't or won't connect me to this new cabinet -

"In regards to your query below, the properties connected to this cabinet are pre-determined during the planning and building phase of the installation of the cabinet.

Due to this we are unable to connect your property to this cabinet."

My house isn't built yet so has no phone line. Can someone enlighten me as to how an address gets connected to a specific cabinet? Is it actually possible to change cabinets?

This has been asked many times - the answer is simply no, you can't pick your cabinet as Chorus will have their copper in your area running from a specific cabinet.

Very briefly, the cables branch out from a particular cabinet and are fed around the planned area - these feeders will have bundles of 50 or more pairs together, and take a given route. Much the same as the trunk and branches of a tree, with the cabinet being at the root. It is far from trivial to change the path of the cables once installed, and essentially you are just tapped into the feeder that goes past your property - that feeder will make its way back to a specific cabinet or exchange, and the path of the cable cannot be changed.

There is!? Where does one find that information?

I used a RSP tool to see it, but a subset of that data is visible on the Chorus broadband and RBI checker showing where the fibre runs.

Thanks to Steve and Jase??   I used the link Jase (?)  showed to check here in Alexandra on what I expected would be fibre for the local schools/two subdivisions and the Dunstan Hospital and found something rather odd... will follow up on my UFB2 thread...Thanks again....Laurie

Just give it time. If you haven't even had your house built yet things may have changed by the time you do. The two new cabinets in that area are still not showing any coverage on the chorus broadband map I linked earlier. Unless they have been put there to service new subdivisions only, it looks more to me like they have been positioned to fill the xDSL coverage 'hole' along Oropi Rd. I could be wrong but time will tell I guess.

I'm still hoping they're there for some future fibre plans. There are no new subdivisions going in, no mains water up there for a start. You can't subdivide anything less than 3ha as of about 18 months ago so there'll be no infill for the foreseeable future.
