I'm currently building a house in Oropi, Western Bay of Plenty. My internet options are rural broadband via Vodafone or Spark 4G plans, Spark having more data than VF for the same money (90GB vs 120GB @ $90/mnth). Not enough data for my requirements.

I've just been put onto Lightwire, who offer a wireless 5ghz connection 400GB @ $110/mnth. Looks good to me, but does anyone have any experience with these guys? Any other options I should consider? I don't need\want a landline...

If you're in good line of site then should be ok. Not sure what speeds they offer though. Full Flavour do RBI, 200GB plan. You should get the cables run during the build too.

Lightwire are careful not to mention speeds anywhere I noticed. They do specifically stated there shouldn't be any buffering from VOD services, but that could be at 240p ;-)

I got fibre conduit laid from the gate to house so if Oropi School ever gets fibre (and they want it), we should be good to get that. No time frame though sadly.

Oropi shool already has fibre and there is RBI fibre running down Oropi Rd and Oropi Gorge Rd

I used a RSP tool to see it, but a subset of that data is visible on the Chorus broadband and RBI checker showing where the fibre runs.

But before you get too excited you will have to remember a RBI fibre install will be a minimum 4 figure amount. 5 figure values aren't uncommon either.

Thanks for that Steve. I see the Fibre runs up Pyes Pa road and then across to Oropi School via Oropi Gorge road. My concern is they won't run it down Oropi Road, it's not being developed as quickly as Pyes Pa.

Chorus wouldn't extend fibre beyond it's current footprint unless you footed the bill or something such as a significant greenfields subdivision was developed.

Are you north or south of the school on Oropi Rd? North on Oropi Rd looks like it may be getting new cabinets looking at:

https://gis.geek.nz/celltowers#chorus_cabinets

One looks about 1km north of Lloyds Lane, the other on the corner with Castles Road. Chorus Maps don't show any connectivity yet though...

If your're south... at least you're in the shadow of the Spark tower!

That's a great map, thanks. Yep I'm north, very close to Hereford Road. Map shows a cabinet half way between Hereford Rd and Loyds Lane so that's progress.

Does Chorus do the cabinets and connectivity? One assumes they wouldn't install a cabinet if they didn't have plans to connect it to something... but then I'm optimistic by nature ;-)

Hereford Road would put you ( *best case scenario* ) around 1-1.2 km from that cabinet. Given that in rural situations Chorus generally use larger gauge copper there is a possibility you could get VDSL off that cabinet, (if that was where you were being connected to!) Even if out of range of VDSL, you should still get reasonable ADSL2+

Yes Chorus put in the cabinets (Have you noticed a new cabinet in that area recently?) If you click on the "pink dot" for it in the map I linked to you'll see a Google streetview of it so it looks like it's there. Should have a marking on it TRG/AR.

When I said connectivity, (yes Chorus do that too), I just meant that it may not be "live" yet as nothing is showing on the below map to suggest that it is.

https://www.chorus.co.nz/broadband-options/for-business/broadband-map

Maybe one of the Chorus geeks could weigh in here...

Both Spark and V'fone are offering ADSL for our property now, and they weren't when I last checked about 5-6 weeks ago so that must have something to do with the cabinet. Would love DSL2 or better, otherwise it'll still be something like Lightwire.

That's good news! Maybe it's live already but not showing on the Chorus map yet. And don't worry, any new cabinet like that will be doing ADSL2+ as minimum and VDSL also. As I said, at the distance you seem to be, my guess is you * might * have a chance at VDSL.
