That sounds dodgy from your ISP, Chorus sent out a mailer to RSPs saying they'll courier these out...

"From 7 March 2017, if your customer’s missing a power cable, we can courier one at no extra cost. They no longer need to wait for a site visit by a technician."

This includes identifying before the order or once the order has complete, your RSP just needs to submit a fault indicating a power lead is needed."

Also I agree with having the Molex plugs on the ONTs. As I know someone who destroyed their modem by plugging the power supply from their inkjet printer into it. The printer PSU outputted 35V and the modem needed 12V. Goodbye modem.

I too made this mistake, was setting up for a lan, had two switches i was plugging in my trusty tplink and my cheap chinese one i wanted to have a serious load test..

Not really thinking, plugged the tplink into the chinese switch. no smoke, but dead on the spot!

Was originally going to turn it into a USB switch for the hard to reach occasions (5v 0.5a psu for it)

to be fair, not a costly mistake at all.. was like 5$! but now i have to wait for another to arrive!

an ONT, by far i wouldn't wanna risk that!

I did that with a dialup modem power brick and a really expensive print server back in the day. 16v AC from the dialup modems brick made quick work of the magic smoke containment in the print server.

Our ONT power supply failed overnight. I knew we had a spare, so was not terribly concerned, until the brand new 3rd party ONT PSU went pop when I plugged it in. Your notes and pictures were very helpful in jury-rigging a temporary solution.

Thank you for the recommendation. I did this as well yesterday. Impressively, Chorus got it on a courier within 4 hours of ordering and it will arrive to us (in Auckland) this morning.

For many businesses, fibre internet being down is catastrophic these days. @Wheelbarrow01 could you please suggest to the appropriate team that two additional options are added to that page?

Urgent Courier Delivery @ $70-ish in the major centres. Many businesses will pay for this without hesitation.
The ability to purchase a spare in advance of a failure. We would do this for our clients.

If Chorus don't want to add e-commerce capabilities (which is fair enough), set up a TradeMe store with two repeating listings (and very clear service description on the urgent courier listing).

Glad someone posted this... was just about to myself. Its so simple - had to use it at my new place as previous tenants had taken the power brick with them. At least they didnt rip the ONT off the wall I guess.

I would argue that isn't a great reason not to make spare PSUs available.

Power supplies fail, and this is common enough. Rolling a truck involves multiple parties and the scheduling of resources, which takes time and expense for all involved. Customer self-repair using a spare PSU (if the client sees value in having one on hand) reduces the end user's down-time and does not require coordination of ISP or Chorus personnel.

ONTs fail and fortunately (in my experience) this is rare. Having the backing of a premium Chorus SLA in that circumstance is of significant value.

What I am saying is, if a business having the internet go down is "catastrophic" then they should be paying more than circa $120 for a BS2 connection and get a BS3 with the appropriate SLA regardless of what the fault is (powersupply/fibrecut/ontfailure/whatever)
