there are some small tweaks coming to VDSL/ADSL in the next month or so which may or may not increase your up and down speeds a little.

For probably 98% of users your connection is going to deliver virtually the same end user experience and QOE as somebody on a Gigabit UFB connection.

... It only becomes a very temporary problem when I download a lot of data, (Im talking maybe downloading a steam game 40GB or something), ...

I'm very happy with my VDSL connection. Like darylblake, it's only big continuous downloads that cause an issue. We constantly stream, download & play on-line.

What do you currently use for internet? I would offer myself to provide a UFB link, especially as I have backup power for my ONT, router ect. But Im in an urban part of Auckland, And I can't see the sky tower from my house. So probably don't have line of sight to your house.

I currently have VDSL at ↓ 56,0 Mbit/s↑ 10,5 Mbit/s which I know half this forum will say I should be happy with but when I look at your speeds I get very envious.

BTW, I'm out South in the Karaka Point area.

Have you done anything to optimise your VDSL?

Do you have a master filter installed?

Have you considered relocating the VDSL modem closer to where the line enters your house?

Since you already have quite good VDSL the cabinet would have to be quite close to your house. Do you own or know who owns the land next to the cabinet? Investigate the feasibility of getting a new connection to a fence post or similar close to the chorus cabinet. The install your own little cabinet with a VDSL modem linking to ethernet, PTP wifi, your own fibre link ect. Depending on what line card is installed in the cabinet the max VDSL speed you will get will be 70 down for the older cards or 100 down for the newer cards. Hopefully someone from Chorus would be able to tell you what cards are installed in that cabinet.

Or if you are down a long driveway, consider doing the above but only to where the driveway joins the road. Assuming the phone line follows your driveway. If you are on the 8b VDSL profile, you might only need to do only a little improvement to get moved up to the much faster 17a profile.

And put your VDSL modem onto a backup power supply or a UPS. And try to avoid restarting it if possible. If a power cut occurs in your area, then restart your modem before the power comes back on. It will resync to a much better speed due to everyone elses modems being off due to the power cut. Less interference between the different phone lines in the cables.

Also not all VDSL modems are the same. What modem are you using?

Thats very positive sounding about the DLM boost. Im surprised it might be that high. I have heard that ADSL is gonna get better as well, so it is good news all round thanks to the chorus lab.

He is on a Broadcom Card too. They can go up to 100/50. Ikanos can only do 70/30. The Fritz Box's actually have reasonably decent VDSL modems in them.

Take it as a grain of salt, but here is a quick analysis of a line much like yours.

This graph is averaged down to every week, so minor variance is taken out, note the points were it changes angle as a resync (have arrowed the points to make it reasonably clear).

I'll stress once more, grain of salt.

Wow, i like the look of that. Is something that will require Chorus visiting every cabinet and so remote places like mine get it in 2020 or is this something that is rolled out like a system upgrade?

@beaglenz At least say if you have a master filter installed or not. If you can plug the modem into different jackpoints and it still works then you don't have one installed. if you have a special jackpoint that the modem must be plugged into for it to work. it could be marked: DSL, ADSL, Jetstream, VDSL ect. Then you do have a master filter installed. But depending on age it could be an older ADSL one instead of a newer VDSL one.

Since you are on 8b profile with good speed. It is definitely worth investigating if any wiring improvements could be made to your line. As if you get moved up to 17a profile you will get a really good speed boost.

As an example in a friends house - ADSL - 12/1 Just outside VDSL area. Incoming line, branch to granny flat on front of property, second branch to front bedroom, line continues to junction box underneath kitchen floor, 3 cables out, 1 to kitchen jackpoint, 1 goes 5m then just stops, 1 to lounge jackpoint, lounge jackpoint then has cables to 2 more jackpoints splitting off from there. Modem/router plugged into lounge jackpoint.

Cut branches to granny flat and front bedroom, cut all cables in junction box and reroute incoming cable to lounge jackpoint, disconnect cables going out of lounge jackpoint. So lounge jackpoint is now the only working jackpoint in the house. And all unused line branches (stubs) have been disconnected. Speedtest is now 13/1.3 and friends also say that the internet is faster.

So a worthwhile speed gain for a house that is much further away from the exchange / cabinet than the OPs house. Total cost - about an hour of my time and a piece of electrical tape that was used to tape the relocated incoming line to one of the old lounge jackpoint cables to help pull it into the jackpoint. Although ironicly the same time I did that Chorus said that fibre is now available to that property.
