@Linux G.INP brings copper latency down around about inline with Copper.

Chorus have also teased G.Fast, which over short distances will allow very comparable speeds.

Overall fibre is still king.

The reality:

Non technical people - fibre must be faster and copper is so unreliable and going to be shut down soon. I better choose fibre

Geeks - I can get 100Mbps on my VDSL connection and have a master splitter installed. Technically I don't need fibre; but give me Gigabit fibre anyway so I can show the Aussies my speedtests!

So I don't think the market for copper in fibre areas is very significant.

I think the market is solely sub-technical people who really just have no idea what they're doing, or just want the absolute cheapest plan possible.

I struggled with slow, flaky ADSL at my last flat in a non-cabinet part of Mt Eden until fibre finally became available. Immediately got it installed (thanks to a supportive landlord) and enjoyed the perfect high speeds for a few months before I bought a house and moved out. I checked the Chorus SAT out of curiosity a few months later and saw the new tenants had connected back up to 7mbps ADSL foot-in-mouth

How do I know when/if I am on the new updates?

I was getting 70/30 but recently my connection has been flaky after years of good stability. I have a master filter so I know it's not that.

If I was their landlord, copper would have been removed and they would not have been permitted to order a copper service.

Agreed! Particularly as the copper in that particular flat was terrible - the jack wasn't even fixed to the wall and just sat on the carpet.

I can only hope their ISP gave them a good hard sell for UFB as well.

For some reason despite like 10000 chorus visits for times when it's wet, it's never been properly fixed. I think they just throw a bandaid over it. I've asked them to show me the "wet" area, so I could consider paying to get it fixed myself, but they didn't want to :)

Chorus are relying on lethargy. I'm technical but not typical - in the Enable area with Chorus VDSL now providing a stable 105/45 connection. That's plenty fast enough until the kids grow into teenagers, so the only appeal of fibre right now is to catch the free install. And the sign up deals from door knockers (Spark & Vodafone so far), but dislike the arm twisting. So no hurry eh?

I'm guessing that the chorus exchange device I'm on has a max of 70/10, so these changes wouldn't make that any faster?

70/30 (linecard limited line) is an Ikanos linecard.

These do not support the vectoring at all.

I'm unsure if Broadcom cards support vectoring, Possibly @chorusnz could verify if these also need replacing?

As it stands at the moment, this is a Pilot, with chorus intending (and already upgrading many areas) to roll this out.

Comcom just need to give it the sniff test or whatever first...
