100/20 is plenty, gigabit is only worth it if you are a really heavy user(or want your 50GB game in 10 minutes and not 1hr40..).
Pumpedd:
If you have more than 2 heavy simultaneous users in the house think about 200/20. If not 100/20 is a great start.
four active users in my house watching youtube/netflix constantly, im on VDSL and it does fine. sure im excited for ufb (coming in the next few months, well apparently), but my 70Mbps vdsl connection seems to handle a couple of 4k streams and 2 youtube stream plus all the downloading etc and gaming the computers are doing.
100 Mbps down should be heaps for 99% of users I would imagine. geeks would want more for steam downloads :)
sparkz25:
who is doing 1G/1G plans?
Sorry, I had in my mind that NowNZ did a 1G/1G plan, but actually "Fibre Xtreme" is a 900Mb/400Mbs plan.
My apologies.

I doubt you'll even notice when you move from that to fibre!

im a geek, ill be be getting the fastest one for my steam downloads :) but netflix 4k will still be netflix 4k.
HowickDota:I'd say yes only if you do a lot of large uploads, to get more than 20mbits upload you have to go to gigabit. It's a shame there aren't any 100/50 or 200/100 plans from the major providers.
Yes you need gigabit speeds to help increase the average speed reported in the country. Be a patriot - get the best.
reven:Not much point if the steam servers can't DL that fast. lately my downloads on steam have been going about 40Mbps and I am on a 200Mbps connection.

Do you need a car that can go over 110km/h?
I do enjoy downloading from Steam at 50MB+ /s :)

Yes. A car that is powered to have a top speed of 110km/h will never be able reach that speed on the motorway, and will barely get to 80, causing all drivers behind to die of rage.
For interactive performance it's absolutely fine, and it's all 99% of people will need. The only time I want more than 200/20 is uploading online backups of the family photos and videos I take - I did 3GB today which took around 30 minutes to upload, so not a big deal. Most products won't max that out anyway, but my backups to S3 easily max it out because it uses a bunch of upload threads.

What were they previously? Flatmate managed to get 180Mbps from Steam. He even once had a download speed race with a friend. Both started downloading the same game at the same time. Flatmate - from Steam servers. Friend (at a different house) - From a server on the same LAN as him.
Steam server via UFB won. As the computer at the house with the local server was only connected via fast Ethernet.
Aredwood:200mbps and my Steam games are on my Raid 0 SSDs.
