where are you getting this 8 years from? its all suppose to be done and dusted for UFB2+ (latest rollout) buy the end of 2022. which by my calculations is only 4 years away.

Last time I checked Chorus' map it said 2026 for our address.

Edit - now it does not give any sort of time scale and the nearest fibre to us is 35km away in Masterton.

Well, I am unsure if we will ever get it based on what little information I can find.

The map used to have a date (2026) but now there is nothing to indicate when we might expect it. Masterton is the only place in the whole of the Wairarapa that has fibre - the rest of the map is entirely empty.

If anyone can point me to a website that will give me a date, I will look it up and let you know what it says.

The first link tells me nothing other than what I have now.

The second tells me that by 2022, I won't have fibre at our home. The village centre (less than 2km from our house) will, but none of the houses or businesses in the greater village area will.

Here is a fairly diagrammatic map - sorry, coloured with a mouse! We live in the middle of the pink bit.

I suspect a lot of "rural" NZ (and you can see we hardly constitute rural) will miss out as well and as technology demands more and more speed for new internet applications and devices in future, a two-speed economy will result. Even more irritating is the fact that fibre goes to a cabinet a few hundred meters from our house...

I could get twice the speed from 4G right now if I could get the same data allowance (ie unlimited at full speed). Perhaps by 2022 that will be possible, who knows?

Its been some time since I went down that road in martinborough, but as I recall most of the electrical and telco wiring is aerial on poles? or is everything underground now?

If it's all underground, youre out of luck. If any part of the cable has deteriorated and is exposed to ground water, good luck finding it and fixing it. Only Chorus can do that, and whether they want to is a seperate question.

Aerial is a little better as there's less complexity involved, but again is down to Chorus to act. Deteroriated plastic sheath, water getting into the CTP, anything is possible really. At least you're not likely to be in a dense sheath of wire, so tracing wouldn't have been that consuming I would think.

You probably need the Chorus folks on this board to act - front of house call centre cant do anything except bat you off with scripted answers, or possibly raise a fault if you're lucky.

87% get fibre under UFB 1 or UFB 2.

1-2% will likely get fibre via other methods, new green field subdivisions, Chorus RBI fibre offer, other suppliers of fibre (I am aware of some ISPs looking at laying rural fibre in some areas), paying Chorus the full price to have it installed (NGA on App), Chorus lifecycle or fault replacement in some cases.

The remaining will either have ADSL, VDSL, Fixed LTE wireless (Spark, Vodafone and 2degrees), WISPS (Wireless ISP) or in a few cases Satelite.

Depending what Labour does, I am not sure if you will see much more rural fibre expansion funding by the govt. It is unlikely Chorus, etc will self fund it except where it is cheaper than fixing copper.

It's underground. They laid fibre to the cabinet in the roadside verge (about 300m away) and then when I recently did a subdivision, I had to work with Chorus and I watched them take the copper cable from under the roadside verge opposite, under the road to the new accessway. They did insist that we installed a third dummy cable to draw fibre to the new subdivision plots, but looks like that was over-optimism on their part and wasted cost on mine.

If I could use the 4G connection instead of copper, the speed is presently showing 48.8 down and 6.29 up on my phone!

@Geektastic this does sound like water getting into the joints as said before in this thread . This shouldn't be a hard fault to fix/find as long as the field tech gets the right info to help him find it.

Asking your provider to run an extended line test so that when the faults happens and is logged it will give the field tech a wealth of info to help find the root cause regardless of weather at the time.
