nah its a MDU, but chorus are too lazy to install the fiber, they pretty much byt the sounds of things turned up to site and said to our data guys that it wasnt their job to install the fiber

MDU's are a lot different

i havent heard of anyone but chorus or their contractors installing fibre on an SDU

Sorry, not entirely sure what MDU or SDU are?

While it may be true that only Chorus or their contractors can install fibre, surely, anybody can provide a channel, ducting, trench or path for them to follow?

So, after Chorus have visited the site and BEFORE the implementation of their cheap has chips solution...

e.g. a bit of cabling wrapped round a tree and placed across a lawn covered by a fine coating of sand...

I could get another company to dig out a properly designed and constructed ditch that will protect their precious fibre cable from someone with a spade that they got for Xmas.

Chorus then turn up, stumbler out of their van and run their wire in the wonderful and expensive duct.

The end result being a happy but slightly poorer Netflix viewer not having to watch a circle spinning on their TV set.

well yes and no, if you can get ahold of the micro duct you can run that in to your property or as every has been suggesting you can run a conduit and make them use that, and take a few photos along the way to show them and also advise them that its a better install than what their techs could do.

one of our properties we had a duct that had been installed as a spare atleast 15-20 years ago, the scoper came out and said they were going to micro trench up the 50m drive in concrete and lay the duct in that, we advised that there was a spare duct and that they were to use that, they didnt really want to at first but we told them that they had to so they did, it wasn't until they cane to run the flat-core in to the property that they were baffled on how to do that, my old man had to actually run it for them as they had no idea how to do that and get a cable around in the building.

Sorry, not entirely sure what MDU or SDU are?

SDU= Single Dwelling Unit

MDU= Multi Dwelling Unit

I think anyone saying that you can install your own fibre doesn't understand how fibre actually works.

The typical fibre install for a SDU is a single fibre run from the fibre splitter tray somewhere out on the street to where your ONT is placed. Then a single short splice with a LC connector to plug into your ONT. Installers also coil about 1.5M inside the OTP which is the box outside your house where the fibre comes into your house and another 1M or so behind the ONT in the splice tray. But that doesn't have any splicing it's just a place where if there was a break or issues the fibre "could" be re-spliced to there, or if you needed to move the ONT inside your house they could cut the single splice for the LC connector and pull the fibre back, then re-blow the fibre to the new end-point.

All the fibre is owned by Chorus and non-Chorus tech's are not permitted to access the fibre splitter splice tray in the street (as that is Chorus / LFC property).

I would STRONGLY recommend against getting anyone other that Chorus or the LFC in your area doing ANY work on the fibre connections unless you want to be in for a large bill for destroying their property.

MDUs are completely different as the Body Corporate or building owner will have signed an agreement as to where the demarcations exist and who would be installing in-building fibre vs what goes into the comms room and who has access. That construct doesn't exist within a single property as it is just the owner of the house and the LFC and there is no Body Corp involved.

You are correct in saying this @BarTender, as i have been mentioning and mentioned that they just need to install the micro-duct and or conduit them selves to allow those monkeys to blow the fiber through the microduct (I should have been a bit more clear on that part)

A SDU actually has a 2c fiber blown up the duct and a MDU will have either a 12c or a 24c fiber blown up the duct to the ETP, and there is 50% of the time always a splice behind the ont , and the connector in the ont is a APC-SC connector not a LC, the 50% chance of the splice is if the tech has used the flatcore or the hybrid cable from the ETP to the ONT.

And yes as you said " I would STRONGLY recommend against getting anyone other that Chorus or the LFC in your area doing ANY work on the fibre connections unless you want to be in for a large bill for destroying their property." I agree with this as its not something the average person can do and it should be left to the monkeys that have attended the 2 week training course.

But i Strongly recommend if you want a nice/clean install to install your own ducting/conduit up your driveway or under ground up the drive and in the house/building

Chorus often request you to get an electrician to install the combined fibre/cat5 cable from your ONT to the OTP if you want to to go down wall cavities, or anything else slightly non-trivial. I had to do it myself at home because they requested I contract an electrician to do the job (just so happens I am a registered electrician + EE).

ours is also tacked to the crumbling fence. i was given no other option. take it or leave it. i took it.

they were very happy to install the ONT where ever i asked them, very helpful in that sense. in the end i chose a very hidden spot. i then ran my own cat6 cable from ont to my router which is in the center of my house. (i only crimped about 50 plug heads for the 2 ends ... after which i became a master crimper)

We also are in a 1980's house and I had always naively assumed copper for pbone/VDSL ran through conduit under our ashphalted driveway, although I had never been able to locate a demarc point. Turns out the copper was laid directly under the driveway and simply ashphalted over.

We too were having a fibre run along a fence line suggested, but after my stating I was unhappy with that as an approach, we ended up with a slot cut trench through the asphalt and up under the house. It's actually not too bad a job..

Bit of an update....I decided to dig a trench myself.

I spoke to one of the local Chorus techs (working for Broadspectrum) who were working on the roadside nearby and asked about getting some 20mm ducting supplied, he called his superior and advised that Chorus no longer supply the duct to go from the road to the house, even in a situation like this where the trench is all dug and ready to go, which is a little disappointing.

I called a local electrical wholesaler who will sell me the correct ducting (in 6m lengths) but they also thought in this situation that Chorus should supply the ducting too.

@chorusnz are you able to let me know the story there? Is there any chance of me getting the 20mm ducting supplied here, or do I need to buy it myself? Thanks heaps.

Edit - on another note, how dry is the ground! Bit of a worry, we seriously need some rain.

Yep, trolley saw to cut the asphalt and a digger. Pretty cheap really, took a mate around 20 mins with the saw and me around an hour and a half with the digger to get to this stage.

Still rather go to the effort and get it done right.
