Where does one find info on plans of ADSL1 upgrades? In Waiuku, Awhitu area, been trying to get standard adsl for the past 4 years now :)

Thats sweet as, apparently I've been upgraded to adsl2+ for a couple of months but cabnetisation is still months away in Jan 2009

Claudlands has 44 cabinets hung off it, 28 of which are just basic junction cabinets that will be upgraded to ADSL2+ late next year. However there are 16 cabinets pretty much all of which are in Rototuna that currently have ADSL1 DSLAMs fitted, these are due for ADSL2+ upgrades early 2010.

I guess you are on one of these latter cabinets.

You are a fountain of knowledge Cyril, a question about the above, what is a basic junction cabinet as opposed to a normal(?) cabinet with DSLAMS fitted? You say above a basic junction cabinet will be upgraded to ADSL2+, does this mean they currently do ADSL or do you mean the cabinets which join cable runs together, and they will then convert these to actual cabinets with DSLAMS?

They have no PCM gear in them, they just serve as a place to connect the cables to the grey helmets and other street junctions onto the massivly large bundles that go back to the exchange. Most of them around here are metal, green and have a door lock that is just a triangular key that offers little security. Usually see a downers or whoever it is now van parked up at it with a guy sitting on his toolbox poking at it to see which side of it the decrepid copper has died and swapping things around to get a better pair for a dodgey line.

I am still about 600m from my nearest one, and its not getting done till miles away. Apparently I am now in the red zone when I check so I guess vodafone are now quite happy to sell me mediocre speeds till the cabinet goes in in 2009 or 10, and I guess they are hoping that they will have sub loop unbundling by then.

I hope that they sort out cabinet sharing since otherwise it will start to look like a mini data center on the side of the street if a decent wholesale market doesn't come out of the mess that is LLU.

Hi, as Richard says, 99% of existing cabinets are simply junction boxs that contain distribution frames. Typically there will be one or two feeders back to the main exchange (100 or 200 pairs each). These terminate in the cabinet, then 50pair distribution cables run out down the nearby streets dropping off at each pillar box between pairs of properties to your home.

A very small number (around 20%) of these cabinets have PCM gear in them, which means rather than 100 or 200pair feeders there is a nxE1 via fibre feeding line cards in the box. Some have Conklin mini DSLAMs (ADSL1 only) and some have a mix of both. It seems the ones in question here have ADSL1 DSLAMs in them.

Most of the cabnetisation program is replacing basic joint boxs with new ISAM cabinets that feed ADSL2+ from the cabinet, the program also include creating new ISAM cabinets where none previously existed.

You will be limited to ~ 4mbps because of your 128kbps upload speed. If your line stats are really good then FS/FS is really worth it.

i see that chorus link doesn't cover all exchanges or all cabients unless there not getting all upgraded due to the cabinetisation plan

It's all very interesting, the basic cabinets are quite short eh? waist height. I understand now :-)

So, when a basic cabinet is replaced with a ISAM cabinet, does it take a while for those connections to be moved across. I ask this because we are in serviced offices at 300 Richmond Road, Grey Lynn/Ponsonby and they put a big chest high cabinet in and it's been about 60 months now, but our connection speeds show we are probably going all the way back to the Ponsonby exchange still.

We are around 60 metres from our cabinet, so am very interested to know when we will be plugged in. :-)

60months is 5yrs, it will most likely just be a PCM/joint cabinet, what code is on the side of the box, the following are due for upgrade this october through Jan.

I'm in Whangarei (horahora) and last month there were workers upgrading the cabinets about 200 metres down the road from my house (took them a week or 2 of digging everything up). Not showing any speed improvements 'tho. I read on the Chorus site that only customers of Chorus will enjoy the upgrade benefits...Am I missing out on something here?

Hi, there are two cabinets near HoraHora to be upgraded, one about now and another early next year. Maybe the one you have seen your not on, there are around 250 lines on both cabinets that get upgraded, or maybe the work is only partially complete.

If you are on a Telecom phone line, as opposed to a Vodaphone or Orcon LLU line, which you have no way of being outside of certain Auckland suburbs at this time, then you are a Chorus customer. Chorus is the new company thats been seperated out of Telecom that has ownership of all the Telecom local copper.

Does that mean that since I'm paying Telecom for the line, (but Slingshot for tolls), I'm counted as a Chorus customer?

Like Vorbis, I'm in Whangarei but I haven't got a clue where the nearest cabinet would be. Does someone know what cabinet feeds/will feed the area around the Hospital?
