I am not going to start poking around in conduit. I'll leave that to them. I'll know soon enough, but I was keen to see what the likely scenario was as I am exceptionally keen to avoid capping down our fence. They could pretty much run it against the concrete edge from the street to our door way, or go down the conduit. I don't really mind. I worry about breaks or damage if it's attached to the "side" of the concrete at ground level.

Does remind me of my brother inlaws install, though, half was in conduit, half not, as well as notched out fence posts which actually caused stability issues a year or so later.

Why not just trench it through the garden? That would have been easier and quicker (and therefore cheaper) surely! I'm feeling more and more grateful to the teams I encountered for my install who were completely reasonable!

or go find the contract from the government to the LFC's and quote the section that says LIKE FOR LIKE! then wait for 5 months in an email game.....

I suspect there is a slim to non existent chance they would do the scope and install in a single visit?

I'd really love to have a closer idea what part of the AM they were likely to come but they don't seem to want to commit.

Depends on complexity. For mine they did scope & install on the same morning, but it was super easy with duct all the way, cable in place, and just needed to install ONT inside the house directly on the other side of the ETP. They texted in the morning to say they were running an hour late, and arrived on time (at new time).

In preparing for my recent fibre install I was also getting hung up on where the existing copper entered the house and whether they were going to use the conduit from that or not. The copper entered the house in the lounge at the front of the house but I really wanted the fibre to end up in a cupboard in the middle of the house where my switch and cable runs terminated so I worked through a plan, drew it up and waited for my site visit.

When the guy from Chorus arrived I explained to him where I actually wanted the ONT to end up and suggested a completely different route from the copper. He happily agreed to the alternate plan and did a really good job! :-) We ended up running the fibre underground along the side of a garden mowing strip for 10m or so (similar to your driveway garden) and then cut across the lawn and came up under a deck and then ran the rest of the way surface mounted to the underside of the deck (where nobody will see it). Finally we ran conduit up an outside wall and drilled through, into the cupboard and mounted the ONT on a pre-prepared backing board beside the switch. Couldn't have been happier!

I suspect the best idea is to have a well though out view of where you want it to be run and a practical way to get there and if it doesn't make their life much harder, then you might get what you want.

Also, my guy came for the site visit (with an install booked for the following week) but once we talked it through he just got on and installed it. It took a few more hours than the booked 8-12 site visit time but I was pretty happy!

I guess I'll talk to them about a Ok, Better, Best arrangement and see what they are prepared to do. I am conscious that the more complicated the more likely there are delays. I am pretty keen to get hooked up ASAP, so it may end up being a compromise between speed of install and what is more presentable.

I have been reasonably impressed with the process to date. I was able to pin them down for an early appointment and they were on time.

The conduit is blocked, which is probably our fault, or rather the fault of the guy who laid concrete after we moved in, he has probably pinched the conduit.

They can come down in the garden on the right hand side as pictured, but then need to cut the concrete 3 times to get to the lounge which is our preferred. There were some issues with that I wasn't that happy with, so they are going to go down the left hand side garden buried until they reach the hedge, then put the remaining 8 meters into conduit which will sit against the concrete. They can't dig down as they would damage the roots, so it will sit slightly buried but we will need to get some top soil to bury it properly. Then they will dig a 20mm deep trench across our and bury the cable, put a box on the outside wall beside the lounge and mount the ONT inside where I want it. I have to pay for the conduit but it's pretty cheap, the entire thing will cost around $150 which is going to provide some additional protection.

One the plus side they will do it today, and they were happy for me to not hang around for the outside part so I'll meet them at 4pm for the indoors area.

I was a little surprised at having to pay for the Conduit but apparently @chorusnz it's not covered by the standard installation.

If you are paying for the conduit, ask for impact resistant conduit, the normal green stuff will shatter at the slightest knock, the impact resistant conduit I used to use you could hit with a sledge hammer and it not break.

Either way I am jealous, I still have 2 - 3 months to go.

That is correct for our free standard install. We do not provide additional conduit to go around the ruggedized microducting used externally. There are a few exceptions to this, certain bends or transitions between mediums require the microduct goes through a short section of pipe. But generally if you would like additional mechanical protection this will be at your own expense. ^Richard

I did enquire about impact-resistant Ducting, but the installer didn't know what I was talking about. Said the stuff they use is pretty tough and you'd have to hit it with a hammer pretty hard to smash it. He said they only use the green stuff.

The green denotes that its telecommunication ducting. Its best practice to use so that you can tell at a glance between services. You have blue for water and orange for power as well.

All PVC piping is generally pretty strong unless its been left out in the sun for a while (UV being the death of plastics). Can’t say I’ve heard of impact resistant ducting either. ^Richard
