@u13turbo That ping difference of 15ms is going to make next to zero difference

Depends what your doing. I know it is minimal, but everything helps.

@u13turbo These are ICMP packets so don't have priority on the network so are not a true reflection of the latency to and return from a server

Is there a way to get a true reading?

3.06ghz Celeron(gonna overclock to 3.8ish)

See, normally people who ask this are on a better provider to begin with.

In your case. Just about any provider is an improvement..

To be fair, HD Net(Unlimited Internet) has been very reliable. Obviously there routing is not the best but we have never had an outage over 3 years.

My main concern was when they dropped price from $75, to $72. When I questioned why mine was still $75 i was told that the lower price was a promotion for new customers. Which i know companies do, but not when there is no contracts locking the new customers in. That made me want to change due to being a loyal customer but not being treated like one.

@u13turbo OMG HD internet I would not recommend them to my worst enemy! Change to a real provider

For great service and price I do recommend 2degrees. As you're on Unlimited Internet you're already likely on CG-NAT (which 2degrees do by default)

Only us geeks that run servers at home and some VPN clients need a connection without CG-NAT

Just a couple of recent examples of not-so-great things they have done - one that I recall was kicking someone off their so-called unlimited plan, because their usage was too high.

@quickymart Absolute rubbish 2degrees has made it clear it's broadband plans ' unlimited ' is 100% unlimited

This has been confirmed by 2degrees more than once on Geekzone

I was referring to Unlimited, not 2degrees (as referenced by the links I posted).

@quickymart sorry thought you were saying 2degrees had removed a customer

I take that back then

Yes, use TCP packets if you can.  On Windows, use tracetcp.exe.  On Linux, use tcptraceroute (or tcptraceroute6 for IPv6).  These programs send out TCP SYN packets to a TCP port on the destination server.  The IP "time to live" field is set to the number of hops allowed before an ICMP "time to live exceeded" reply should be sent.  So you get back ICMP packets from each hop until the final one which gets back a TCP ACK packet.  The ICMP reply packets can be subject to the lower priority delivery through routers, but the outbound TCP SYN packets and the final TCP ACK packet will be processed at standard priority by the routers.
