If you want another reason for 2degrees - I've found they reward existing customers providing you're not in a contract with them. Every year with them so far I have gotten some perks with staying with them - it may be a credit, monthly discount etc. You've just got to phone them and ask nicely if they can offer you anything.

No, it is not going to be what new customers get (as normally, they do this as a loss) but at-least they're happy to acknowledge and reward me for having mobiles and broadband with them.

Part of this can be luck of the draw in terms of who you get. I recently hit them up as I was coming off contract, specifically wanted a new Fritz (to add to the mesh) but they politely declined. SO, I moved over to Orcon, gigabit (up from 100/20 with 2deg), public IP, cheaper monthly fees. Yes, the routing isn't as great (looking at routes to Cloudflare in particular) but overall it'll be a 12m contract and then see what the market is like.

How much does Orcon Power cost?

Slingshot also but they're both part of Vocus.

Vocus offer power too but don't really advertise it. They called me up a few weeks after I took out a UFB plan to ask if is was interested in power, I politely answered that after the service I received with broadband, that would be a no.

I expect to hear back from Voyager tomorrow hopefully. Will give me something to think about.

This is because power costs vary widely by address - depending on your lines company and low user/standard user, controlled/uncontrolled hot water and a bunch of other things. Given them your address and they will provide the rates. Eg mine show up as 30c/day and 29.48c per kWh.

Had a very friendly, concise and positive response from Voyager today and I thinks that's a no-brainer. With landline it'll be only $5 more per month than the Slingshot equivalent and $20 less than 2D (without mobile bundle discount), sorry 2degrees. There's no contract either so if it doesn't work out then I can still go back or to 2D.

Basically, I can get the home giga-UFB and landline with BYO router and... get static IPv4 & IPv6 addresses for a ridiculously low 1-off fee.

Might do the move during lock-down if I'm feeling brave but thanks to everyone for the feedback and @michaelmurfy for your blog pointing me in the right direction and avoiding a potentially terrible mistake.

It's been an interesting exercise and I'm a little surprised my decision hasn't been based on free this or discounted that.

@gravidar I assisted a friend doing a move to Voyager from BigPipe during the lockdown remotely.

BigPipe doesn't have VLAN Tagging so was a bit of a fun experience remote-provisioning his router on time. But all went through smoothly! You made the right choice for your needs :)

I don’t want to sound like a broken record here, but what about their peering? They seem to be the flat out worst. Even myrepublic has more nodes.

I’d love to support a Christchurch based company but not if I’m going to run into the same problems I’ve been running into for the last year.

No, not at all. We can all agree myrepublic is the worst overall isp. I’ve made the mistake of signing up to them last year and I don’t plan on making the same mistake ever again.

Which is exactly why I’ve signed up to this forum: to make the most informed decision and pick the best available ISP for a CHCH-based heavy internet user who’s after reliability and low international ping.

I really appreciate your help and input on this, thank you!

Heya @federicocorradi,

We haven't put a lot of emphasis in the past on updating PeeringDB (yes, I know ... we should!), so it's not real representation of our peering capability.
It also does not show our bi-lateral peers - where we have agreements with other ISP's or content providers.
I have added a few additional locations, however not all DCs/Exchanges we are located in are available for selection so a few are missing from the list.

We are a big fan of peering, and are frequently implementing new peers. Coming online shortly is the new CHC-IX, a couple of ISP Bi-lats, and an upgrade/relocation of our WIX port.

If we don't have it now, it'll likely be coming very soon.
If you have suggestions/requests, I'm happy to take them - just send me a PM.

Edit: Just FYI, While Voyager is 'anchored' in AKL, I'm CHC based, with a number of Engineers based down here.
