...the broadband customer market who has male reproductive bits envy with showing off a speed test. (And I refer to my signature in that regard)

Well played sir, well played.

I'd hate to think of the contention issues that would start creeping into the network with mass market 1000/1000 with the number of people who think running speed tests on their Gigabit connection every few minutes to monitor performance is an essential thing to do just to see how well their connection is performing - without realising or understanding the reason their connection may not be performing that well is all the other people doing exactly the same thing.

Hi, as mention by Steve above, GPON is inherently asymetric, its 2.5Gb/s down and 1.25Gb/s up, so I doubt GPON based product will ever be sold at Gig/Gig, currently you can get symmetic plans at 100/100 and 200/200 as this naturally does not push the contention of said GPON.

However Hyperfibre is based on XGPON which is symmetric hence plans on that are being peddled as such ie 2G/2G, 4G/4G etc.

Ah!  I thought all fibre tech was symmetrical in nature and did not understand that the limitation was due to the underlying technology, thank you and @sbiddle for enlightening me!

BarTender: I would love to see 5 minute average utilisation stats off your home broadband connection.
I would be extremely surprised if you managed to saturate the connect or ever consistently peak over 100mbit for more than 2% of the day.

In my situation it's not about average utilisation, it's about meeting maximum peak demand with zero impact or slowdown.

I want my data as quickly as possible regardless of other network / environmental / system influences.

You've already said you can't afford that. Compromises will need to be made :)

Right, so how much are you prepared to pay per month? That will help determine primarily, how much you have to compromise on your other factors?

Well, HyperFibre 2000/2000 is $150/m, so $125 seems fair.

I guess there's a possibility that there may be a 1000/1000 HyperFibre plan at some point?

I'd LOVE to go to 4000/4000 HF, but the cost to upgrade my entire network is somewhat prohibitive!

I'd be interested in a symmetrical gigabit line as well, pricing dependent.

Anything over 1000mbps requires equipment update with both chorus and your internal network

Of course, but 10Gig equipment is expensive!

Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick two as you can't have all 3.

The LFC input rates are set by CFH aka Crown Fibre Holdings as part of the UFB agreements each LFC sign up to.

If the P being Passive and thus a shared medium from GPON means it is shared across multiple connections.

If you wanted higher speed get a point to point, or pay extra.

I'm still struggling with why a LFC or RSP would want to offer a product that only a fraction of a percentage of customers would want or be prepared to pay for.

You keep on forgetting this is MASS MARKET broadband at those prices... anything special over and above the mass market offering will come at a hefty price tag.

This thread is silly for so many reasons.

Sure you can!  I've pretty much got that now, I just want a little more speed :)

It depends on what you classify as 'cheap' of course.  I'd settle for 'affordable'.

I think UFB is extremely cheap in comparison to the actual cost of install.

Try building a house and getting core services such as water, gas, electricity, storm water or sewerage connected and in comparison the subsided installation cost of UFB is incredibly cheap.

Yes, absolutely agreed!

It would be interesting to get a tally of the actual per-install cost!

You mean like these documents?? : https://company.chorus.co.nz/file-download/download/public/2025

Cost per UFB1 premises passed (CPPP): ~$1,573 vs $1,500 -$1,600 guidance (FY18: $1,568)

Plenty of detail on the cost per premises past and cost per install.
