Good point. Before I joined an ISP in NZ years ago I asked if they had a USENET service. They did and I joined.

They don't now so I left them. My current ISP (Orcon) doesn't even offer an email service to new customers.

'ISP' in NZ means internet connection provider, not internet service provider.

Pricing is still way to high. I've got family in the UK on Fibre for under UKP 30 /month now including phone line, I'm paying 50% more for naked fibre.

15-20 years ago out pricing was below or similar, now we're considerably more expensive.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

I don't think it's realistic to compare NZ prices with larger more densely populated countries. They benefit from economies of scale we just don't have.

Many UK ISPs advertise ADSL2 as 'fibre', under the logic that it's fibre as far as the cabinet!

Lowest price is not always a good thing for consumers. The technical know-how and skills involved in running an ISP is fairly considerable.

This is a race to the bottom for peoples salaries too!

They care about what value they get and what they pay. If a RSP can demonstrate extra value they can charge more. If they can't then they are commodities and commodities are generally bought on cost.

You're completely right about selling 'bits' being a commodity. Maybe it is just not a career that smart people should consider in the future.

I'm not taking a position on what is right or wrong, I'm just describing how consumers behave.

he companies just react to what is bought. There's nothing moral about it, it's just the way it is.

So does the NBN in Aus

1GBPS to my brothers basement, VDSL to each apartment - Regardless of the 130mbps sync speed the only time he ever gets that is 4am!

Only 11% of the UK have full fibre (FTTP)

59% have 100+ MBPS FTTN (Fibre to the Node, VDSL to the Premise)

97% ADSL2+

2% <10MBPS

Uncapped "Fibre" plan which is really Fibre to the Node and then VSDL. Speeds I'll need to get my brother to check as they've just switched plans and had a speed upgrade. At Christmas as was getting around 40+ Mb/s down
