They must be since there are no RJ45 cables in the apartment and I suspect they were using their phone.  I guess I should have also asked if they could try the 5Ghz band which the AP also transmits.

Tell them to stand closer to their AP :).

Seriously though, the Wifi saturation is likely to be terrible,  Suggest they connect directly to their router vis Ethernet and then come back with a report on traffic saturation.... also what plan are they on with their ISP????

No ethernet possibility with a phone or tablet. The plan is 100/20 but I doubt if that is factor.

Get a Wifi-Analyzer tool on the phone.  It shows you what access points are in the area, and their relative strengths.  It might guide you to finding a less congested WIFI channel.

Unlikely - we have 2 customers in the Taranaki Street Soho Apartments - its just flooded - unless each apartment turns down there transmit power (which wont happen) this simply wont work

Everything is now cabled and they use 4G for their mobiles (They have unlimited data anyway)

In my apartment I don't use the 2.4Ghz spectrum for anything than my smart remote control base station - everything else is on 5Ghz.

I can only see 2 x 5Ghz networks from my apartment... it really doesn't travel far.

And yup, the 2.4Ghz looks like trash with routers screaming all over the place, hopping channels etc etc.

Oh and of course lots of 'funny' SSID's...

I suggested they move to 5GHz. I am going to visit the apartment in the evening sometime and check for myself.

The "good" thing about 5GHz right now is that most people who don't understand WiFi run at 80MHz channels.

While this is worse for spectrum utilisation, it does at least mean power levels are significantly lower so signals won't travel as far (hence the reason you should really be using 20MHz channels in a typical house).

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

but steve, 20mhz doesn't give me full gigabit over wifi!

Not sure I understand that. Can I set 20MHz channels in my AP at 2.4GHz or is that only 5GHz?

You should only ever be using 20MHz channels for 2.4GHz - every 802.11n device will also allow 40Mhz (and some routers may default to 40MHz) but due to the congestion in the 2.4GHz band you will almost certainly see actual performance using 40MHz channels to be the same or even worse than a 20MHz channel in a noise area.

5GHz devices will give 20/40/80/160 options depending on the hardware and the frequency you are using, but obviously the wider the channel width the lower the effective power output which means reduced coverage.

OK just stopped by and did a test. No ethernet handy so just used my Chromebook over Wifi. This was at 11am

On 2.4

On 5

I've now asked people to use 5 and don't provide the password for the 2.4 unless they can't connect to 5

If people used proper routers with proper wifi it would band steer them to 5GHz. Glad to see you were able to enlighten this chap.

Well just using the router provided by the ISP. I doubt if it's that sophisticated. If I just turned off the 2.4 GHz band I wonder how many devices would stop working?
