Yea UDM is the Beats By Dre of the network world. All form, no function, and very expensive. An RB4011 for half the price has significantly more processing power and a whole truck load more routing features. You just don't get pretty pictures of useless info.

Just a thought also - you could get a cheap Mikrotik or even Edgerouter X to do the PPPoE and pass it as a 1:1 NAT to the UDM. Pretty stupid though as the UDM should be able to do this. Like I say, I didn't even know this wasn't hardware accelerated as that is pretty-much the norm these days with routers.

Not full bridging but you can just put the UDM into a DMZ instead. Totally not the best option though.

Also still really shocked that the UDM does PPPoE in software - like I say, sorry for not believing you earlier :)

No problem I have tinkered with Microtik before and it is decent but we already had the USG and the upgrade on paper seemed great.

Do you actually need UTM functionality?

Might give the Bridging option a go any recommendations for a gigabit router from the likes of Ubiquiti or Mikrotik that can handle gigabit pppoe

You need to spend a bit more to get a comparable Mikrotik to be honest. The Mikrotik you linked will also have limitations with PPPoE due to the MIPS processor.

Edgerouter X is available elsewhere also but I'd recommend that as it is a very small router that can route Gigabit over PPPoE in hardware.

BarTender: So really what you’re saying is because you purchased a particular router that cannot handle a basic ISP use case that a $50 router from Huawei that is now 5+ years old can handle (HG659) that you need to move ISPs to another one that supports a far less palatable to the ISP due to far more support issues and unreliable connections over the more common use case.
Perhaps going for an ERL rather than a UDM would have been a better investment.

Hi, can you expand on 'more support issues' and 'unreliable connections'? I've been googling and unable to find any references as to what you mean. I always understood that ISPs only kept using PPPoE because of legacy infrastructure hanging around since the dial up days, along with no great incentive to switch to IPoE.

If literally all the RB750GR3 is going to do is act as a bridge for PPPoE to IP, it'll probably be okay. Out of curiosity, how invested in the UBNT world are you? You could always bang the UDM on TradeMe and replace it with a RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD, if you're not afraid of the Mikrotik GUI/CLI.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

Another option if you’re into the Unfi world - pickup a USG. They support hardware offloading and no speed issues on 1gig. I still have mine which I used before my UDM Pro. Will need it’s own controller though.

Some cheap ones coming up on TradeMe. ~80-100$.
