quickymart:

It takes some time to get an NGA quote, and a number of providers don't do them as end users think it will only cost a few hundred dollars, but most of them are in the thousands (at minimum), at which point they lose interest and don't usually want to proceed any further.

Does the coverage map (Chorus or the Broadband Map) state you can get VDSL where you are?

basically a little patch of adsl around the neighbouring houses and no vdsl or fibre for quite some distance

If that's the case fibre will cost you quite a bit then, most likely not feasible. Your best bet is probably looking into a wireless provider.

Im basically looking at wombatnet or starlink. Gunna do some research first.
Other telcos are too expensive for basically adsl speeds for their wireless solutions

I would imagine very good. They didn't supply what they said they would.

Oblivian:

Chassis they fit into needs to be able to take the vdsl capable cards which were slightly different to the initial ADSL rollout (one card will do 7-9 connections from memory)

The line cards need to be available.

Likely needs fibre backhaul or similar to supply the higher rate to meet demand (or end in a raft of too sloowwww complaints)

If the box needs a re-work to change any of that. It'll be BAU as the number of customers hasn't exceeded total built capactity

More likely its a constrained uplink.

When the conklins were removed, not all were fibre uplinks.

I'm in rural North Canterbury and had been using appallingly slow ADSL for years thinking there was little alternative as there's no fibre or VDSL out here. Then Covid hit in March '20, everyone worked from home and the ADSL service just fell apart and my ISP really didn't seem to care.

Given I was working from home with lots of Teams and Zoom VCs and had to have reliability of service, I had no option but to go for wireless broadband. I was initially nervous about the experience, but have to say it's been pretty good and far better than the ADSL I endured for years.

On ADSL I was getting 10Mbps D/L at best and it often crashed for days at a time due to system faults at the local ISP box.

With wireless BB I get D/L of between 20Mbps min at peak times and up to 100Mbps at off-peak, and it's much more reliable, although I do pre-emptively re-boot the ISP modem once a week to avoid drop-outs. The distance to the tower is all important - we're only about 1.5Km away with clear line of site across level fields. It's expensive however at $156/month for capped 300Gb, but it works.

I run EdgeRouter and Unifi gear off a DMZ on the otherwise totally dumbed down ISP modem / router combo, and generally forget that we're on wireless BB, not fibre.

It's not as good as the fibre Gbe we get at the Bach, but it's changed our internet experience out here for the better, given the dire ADSL service we were getting.

Thanks & regards,

Edit.... forgot to mention Spark is the 4g wireless provider.

If you're near Marchant Rd, I have a fairly good idea of the geography of that area.
