Goal is definitely gigabit. I've ordered a few of those connectors that @RunningMan recommended. Sadly looks like they'll ship on the 29th.
For now - I'm going to take some interim steps to reduce the number of joins required - I think I can potentially reduce the number of joins by 2... simply by changing the scope of the cable from:

Comms cupboard -> downstairs bedroom -> downstairs living room (currently empty) -> ETP -> Kitchen -> upstairs bedroom -> upstairs comms room
5x joins

To:
Comms cupboard -> Existing cat5e to downstairs bedroom with switch -> downstairs living room (currently empty) join -> ETP join -> Kitchen join -> upstairs bedroom switch -> upstairs comms room via existing cat5e cable.
3x joins

WAF becomes a fairly significant factor - I can get away with using switches in the bedrooms but I won't be very popular if network equipment starts popping up in the kitchen ;)

Shortening the number of joins down doesn't seem to have helped. Believe best course of action is to wait for the proper connectors and then go from there.

I’ve got the Pbtech joiners in place. Still getting 100mbps.
Looks like I’ll be sticking with the wifi bridge till I get around to putting some more switches in.

Hi, firstly, can we see a photo of one of the joins showing the actual wire terminations, just want to check the termination quality. Also if you work backwards replacing a join with a socket (RJ45 keystone) and try trace where it turns turtle. then when you find that connect back the other way to confirm that placing a switch there will sort the issue.

Edit, these are good for hiding switches away in these types of situations.

@Cyril - this is one of the ends + the kitchen (ETP > Kitchen > Bedroom) join. Others are similar.

Will try that suggestion - working from the kitchen and downstairs living area... ETP will try weather permitting.

Hi, no no no no no, you need to work neater than that, these are RF transmission lines you are working with, not phone lines, they need to maintain characteristic impedance out to their spec'd standard, in the case of Cat5e ClassD its 100MHz that GigE requires, cat6 is required to meet ClassE which is 250MHz, again GigE only requires 100MHz charactersation, with a spectral lobe centred on 72ish MHz.

I will try drag out an example of what it MUST/Should look like. Be back in 5

Cyril

Edit, so I whipped down to the workshop and terminated a couple of items, if you are not doing something like this, then it is not up to spec. Note how a minimum of cable is unsheathed, you could have say 5-10mm more unsheath, but no more. Also note, and this is the real important one, the pairs are not untwisted, in 90% of instances you should be able to seat the wires without ANY untwisting, and in a few cases a very minimal of untwist.

Untwisting of the pairs increases its characteristic impedance from the stated 100ohms, this increase creates reflections which inturn creates standing waves which impacts the servicable signal.

Also consider that having more than two of the joints in a single run before landing on an active port (switch) is not advised, typically you keep it to just one, plus the two end keystone or panel terminations. That said I have had 3 joints in a 40m run before and its flew through GigE compliance on my Fluke, but it had terminations like below :)

Also use the correct tool for the jack type

If not possible use a 110 too and snip of the ends neatly

Will try and get something close to @cyril7's specifications this weekend.

Otherwise, I'm probably going to put this on the backburner while I 'convince' the wife on the merits of getting this done properly (eg. paying someone to do it).

I've been following some of the advice and have done some further troubleshooting.

Looks like this is all in vain - confirmed that two pairs  have been tied together (in the wall) with other outlets. Unfortunately it means that we don't have a 'clean' line between upstairs and downstairs.

I think the simplest solution will be to get some fresh CAT6 run from the downstairs comms cupboard to the upstairs comms cupboard.

Hi, sounds like what I was thinking, somewhere the cabling is compromised. So if you can identify where that is and replace it with a full 4pair link then job done. If you are after some outdoor rated cat6 so you can run it outdoors then let me know, currently have about 60m of cat6 outdoor flooded in stock and over 300m of cat5e also outdoor rated and flooded.
