Hi, its very unlikely that you will permanetly damage the input with -40dBm, however with that level of input the preamp is probably in compression, therefore producing intermod and not performing as well as it could.

The 60GHz hear is a bit more expensive, then again it will do Gig throughput. Unfortunately the cheapest 60GHz kit is around $350 for a pair of mikrotiks wireless wire's but 250m is pushing it, hence the cubes, around $400 for a pair is the go.

Yeah it did also cross my mind to run a 300m length of fibre to connect the 2 buildings but I'm fairly sure that will be more than $400 :-)

You can get a 250m pre-terminated cable made by FS.com for under $200.. Just gotta run it down a roll of Alkathene or something?

Thanks @raytaylor for the reply.

at about $500NZ

Thats quite cheap or a bargain price for the throughput and higher reliability they give.

Remember a proper link is $8-15k for a proper licensed link.

My reading tells me I'd need the slightly bigger "cube" versions.. But would have been keen!

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

yes, Mikrotik blurb says 200m or more - but ive not used them over a distance great than 100m. others here say 100m and i assume they've tried over greater distances and havent had much sucess. The cube looks cool though and the 5ghz backup is a bonus - my supplier however is out of stock of the cubes.
