It sounds like they've ordered a fibre installation for her (good thing). She should continue with this IMO.

They've also signed her up for their rental modem, which isn't necessarily a good thing. If your friend doesn't want a smartphone, then I would strongly suggest she gets in touch with Slingshot and cancels the rental modem. You can then purchase a more basic modem (or have Slingshot send one) which won't have the $5/month rental, won't require a smartphone, but will allow her to use a computer or other wireless device. If you want it, I have a totally spare suitable modem she can just have.

Slingshot don't currently offer fixed wireless broadband of the type Oblivian describes.

Thanks for that. The section of your tip that I've bolded -this would require her to have fibre installed, wouldn't it? Plus, she's already been a Slingshot broadband customer for some time, so she already has a modem. Will that one not work with fibre?

Yes it will require fibre to be installed - she will eventually need to have this or another option, it is a superior product to DSL broadband via copper (what she will have now), it's a nice to have should she sell or move out of her property, and the install is currently free; so there is no downside IMO.

It's possible her current modem could be configured to work with fibre, but it's also likely it wouldn't work. It depends on the model. It would be a good idea to get a new device*; whether that is the rental Orbi supplied by Slingshot, a more basic router supplied from Slingshot's ugly modem program or a more basic router purchased/acquired elsewhere.

So in that vein, the question is really does she want the rental Orbi & a smartphone, or another router & keep her current phone? 😀

*Note, I technically misspoke in my first post. For fibre, she doesn't actually need a modem, she needs a router (but modem is a commonly misused term for these anyway).

Hi so it is quite possible that her current modem is suitable for fibre, most modems that ISPs have handed out for some time are also suitable as fibre routers.

So what model is it?

Netcomm Wireless NB304N and later NB604N or the VDSL capable Energy Imports were standard issue of the copper days.. prior to the NF4V, NF8AC as UFB adoption picked up. NF4V would be the most common 'Ugly modem' which I think they issue at no charge (there may be a shipping & handling fee) if you aren't after mesh Wi-Fi (Orbi).

The earlier ADSL2+ Netcomms were four 10/100 switch ports, one of which can be re-purposed as ETH WAN, once suitable for 30/10 but more like the basic 50/20 today due to 1x1 WiFi-N. According to the spec sheet Energy Imports had a GE switch and was also Broadcom based. NB304N may need a firmware upgrade to do VLAN tagging on the WAN.

If OP needs to contact a Slingshot rep on here about the situation, I would suggest tagging in the user quentinreade (last active in 2degrees merger thread). But you might want to check who's doing the billing first as more than one ISP supplies the Orbi and the other modems mentioned above in my post, although it does sound like Slingshot.

OP has Fibre scheduled to go live 23/06 and it says ONT present (if this is not the case there is an Address issue and RSP needs to correct with Chorus)

Copper is definitely withdrawn by Chorus at that location

Sorry, Cyril, I don't know what hardware she has. I'd like to help her more comprehensively, but I'm somewhat out of the loop, for various reasons. Latest news is that she is now in contact with someone at Slingshot who she believes is able to sort her problem, so I can only hope it works out for her.

My interest in her case was 'sparked' (no pun intended) because I'd recently helped a local guy sort out exactly the same Slingshot-based problem. He was also getting the runaround from the ISP, and had been told he needed a special modem and a smartphone (which he didn't want, either). It only got resolved when he finally took my advice and told Slingshot he'd had enough of being stuffed around and was switching to Spark. (My advice was to actually move to Spark, but that was a bridge too far). The problem was quickly solved after that.

Why are Slingshot stuck on the app method of configuring the Orbi. PBtech as an example sell that device and give instructions how to configure using traditional web browser method for various ISP including Slingshot.

The map on that page isn't showing marked individual properties still on copper? I guess that's public(ish) information but surprising they'd publish that.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Not the most wise marketing strategy by Slingshot, scaring them away as customers by offering them 5G smart phones and 5G Orbi mesh wifis...

No one should need an app and a smartphone for anything like this, especially a modem which is almost always used with a pc of some kind. I'm not saying that offering an app as an option is bad, but web browsers exist and most people have one.
