yeah signed up for the giganews trial last night.

Ill give it a go for 2 weeks and see if i like it or not. It seems to be taking ages to load the headers is this normal?

The force is strong with this one!

Note that giganews retain something like > 200 days. For a popular newsgroup, this can be millions of headers / articles. I would not be surprise if take ages to load headers, at least initially.

Yes first load of headers takes ages. After that it is just an incremental update.

But it only grabs headers of the goups i subscribe to correct?

There is a serious amount of stuff on there. Im just using Anroid as a client but already it seems somewhat meh. Perhaps i need a better client. Giganews had tutorials using outlook express but i heard this isnt great for Usenet

Correct will grab headers of subscribed groups. Outlook Express is ok for the text based (messaging) side of things post/reply which is what UseNet was designed for. Not so good for encoded binaries

so...all i need to do is grab the headers for the selected groups and then i can search in a particular group for whatever?

Is there a centralised place to search? I use Grabit but it only allows 2 searches or something on trial.

Try using Binsearch as a Usenet search engine. It's doesn't search 100% of the groups (rather, it searches the more common ones), but it usually gets reasonable->good results.

I'd also like to mention Usenet-news as a provider. Their service isn't high-end by any means, but it's very good if you're only using Usenet rarely (or to start with) as they have "lifetime" blocks (I've had ~1GB sitting around in my account for over a year now.)

binaries.nl is handy for search and also allows the creation of .nzb files
