MooPoo: So basically what you are saying is that it isnt worthwhile having voip unless you have naked DSL?

Correct, because to get traditional dsl you have to have a POTS land line.

... the wife (who is already in CHCH) has hooked the phone up with telecom already :(

I don't think there is a contract minimum term on Telecom's home phone lines, you should be able to change provider or go to naked dsl without a disconnection fee.  I would check the terms and conditions mailed to your wife or call Telecom to double check that though.

but is there a decent voip plan around that makes it worthwhile changing to naked dsl?

and for that matter is there a decent enough naked dsl plan around that makes it worthwhile too? I am after around 60gb a month.

A computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any invention in human history - with the possible exceptions of handguns and tequila.

the problem with naked DSl and the amount you want to use (60g) it is cheaper to pay for a phone line and broadband , Snap a case in point, to get 60 gig on there naked dsl it would cost you $170 a month compare to $130 a month with a phone line

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Have you looked at any of these?

http://www.slingshot.co.nz/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabindex=999&tabid=15&subnav=2
http://www.xnet.co.nz/vfx/
http://www.kiwilink.co.nz/voip.php
http://www.gotalk.co.nz/Products/VoIP/Pages/VoIPPlans.aspx

I'm sure there are more sites offering various voip plans too

and for that matter is there a decent enough naked dsl plan around that makes it worthwhile too? I am after around 60gb a month.

Guess it depends on how much you save by using voip instead the a landline, here's an example...

Snap Pro (60gb) + Snap Voice + Number of calls * Call rates here
89.95 + 39.95 + ??

vs

Snap Naked DSL B (20gb) + More Cap (40g) + Voip cost + Voip calls * rates (if applicable)
89.95 + 40.00 + ?? + ??

Fill in the ??'s based on your usage, choose a couple of other ISP's and do the same comparison...

just remember to get 40 gig more its $80 not $40  ($2 a gig)
