Hardly anyone wants it and it makes no commercial sense to provision a whole bunch of extra bandwidth just to satisfy the Speed Test wishes of a small number at this time.

But if you want it, have a chat to Dan Faulknor (post above). They are an individual I am in regular contact with and respect as an industry peer.

I may advocate for it with the ISP's I work with if there becomes further business demand and/or marketable use cases.

I upgraded from gigabit to 4Gbps hyperfibre recently, and have been pretty disappointed if I'm honest. On a speedtest to an ISP hosted speedtest server, I get about 2.5Gbps down, 4.1Gbps up. I can't even seem to hit the downstream limit even from an ISP hosted server, let alone much else (I've logged a request to the ISP as well, though I feel like they kinda just have shitty peering/transit).

From my brief testing, anything else seems basically no faster than 1Gbps UFB in general. Steam is limited by CPU decompression, Battle.net and Xbox Game Store downloads aren't any faster, "alternative forms of media" don't seem any faster downstream, but am able to hit ~1Gbps upstream which doesn't matter to me at all.

Even at 1Gbps it's so "fast" that there seems no baseline network capacity to support existing bandwidth. Aside from a very niche set of use cases (e.g., from one hyperfibre site to another, which I can't test) there is nothing much more than a speed test to show you the difference.

2Gbps might be worth it, for the 2x increase in downstream and 4x increase in upstream if that's of value to you -- but I can't really recommend it. I hate to think how those on 8Gbps hyperfibre feel.

The hyperfiber roll out hasn't spread very far. I'm in Helensville and can't get it. I want my symettrical 2gig so we can do more fun stuff between homelabs.

Hyperfibre 2/4 is available in all UFB areas now as far as I know. It's just 8G that is harder to get

Yep, we only offer 8G where we have 100G backhaul to our POLTs, otherwise there's a risk of congestion. We're constantly upgrading those, so expect to see some more availability soon.

2 and 4 gig is available everywhere in the chorus footprint and I believe in most other ufb areas

Available in all CHORUS areas now, Enable is still within the 4 Aves only with no eta for anywhere else they cover, and other LFCs I'm not 100% sure on.

You probably wouldnt notice much unless your in the same city as the speedtest server, and the server needs to be spec'd to be able to supply the speed. Most probably only have a 10gig port and are doing other tests at the same time.

I see 2/4/8gig as more for data across town between branch offices rather than intercity distances due to TCP congestion control algorithms and limitations of the peak rates that a single tcp stream would run at. Gamers might get a benefit if their CDN server is in the same city for a fast game download at gigabit speed while not interfering with other users in the household. I cant see much other benefit in it.

Here is a well priced 10gig SFP module for multimode fiber cable for that person above that mentioned they only ran MM cable.

I contacted Voyager to find out when they might start offering Hyperfibre. A rep replied and said "... infrastructure in NZ is not ready yet for the consistent extreme speed of this service" and that they are "interested" in Hyperfibre and I'll be notified when it becomes available.

i'm interested if anyone has a better understanding of HF than I do and the state of the infrastructure. 2Degrees are offering it in my area. If it's reliable I'll consider switching. Voyager is suggesting it's not.

Is the Voyager rep right?

I'd be very interested to know what infrastructure they don't think is up to scratch,

Ours certainly is

Switched to Zeronet for Hyperfibre 2KMbs. They suck. Had issues with the migration. Already had the Nokia ONT but as always Chorus INSIST on coming out. It's a total scam (they like to clip the ticket). I called ahead and told them I had a previous Hyperfibre install with MyRepublic. Yet Zeronet insisted on trying to book a scoping visit followed by an install 6 weeks later. Happens. every. time. (has happened to me 4-5 times with ISP/Chorus).

Dates were all messed up. I was without internet for a bit as MyRepublic finished up and I was still trying to get Zeronet to make the damn administrative cutover, which they eventually did. Pissed me off because I called ahead to make sure it was a smooth cutover, telling them I didn't need an ONT.

Then it turns out they told me to use DHCP but their Hyperfibre offering actually uses PPPoE and nobody told support (nor had the right info on the website). That slowed things too, and costed me hours and hours of troubleshooting.

I complained and comms have been appalling. Email replies don't come unless you prod them several times. It's been two months and still not sorted.

Also, I am not getting the the full speed either. At least on MyRepublic I did. Speed varies for time of day, which I am not paying for.

Useless. Just don't do it.

Sounds like you're probably in the market for a new provider then.

Sorry, I meant to say Chorus UFB areas. That's what we deal with 95% of the time!
