Nope, not going to happen.

It would be a bit like asking Sky to use your own decoder, etc - which wouldn't happen either.

I did look into building my own decoder once - there was hardware you could use but you did need a Sky card. It was a long time ago and a bit of a pipe dream.

But this is a slightly flawed analogy because decoders only receive. Installing your own ONT means it has to work in both directions and therefore be acceptable to the other end. As they will have visibility of it (unlike a decoder) they can turn it (the fibre connection) off at any time if they don't like what it is doing.

I've never known anyone to do that - and I know a fair few people with Sky. But, caveat emptor - if it dies, you're also on your own.

Lots of people, including myself do so. People in campervans who want a 12V compatible decoder, or a second decoder for the batch - only have to take the card between properties instead of the whole decoder, or people who don't want to pay for multiroom.

Back in the day I successfully got mediaportal working with a plugin so could record different channels at the same time.

Different things though. With the decoder, there's a nice air gap between their equipment and yours. With fibre, presumably you could disrupt their managed network and they wouldn't like that occurring (not sure if this is actually possible though).

Yeah, you cannot connect up 3rd Party ONTs to our network.
If you do, its unlikely to work and yes - if someone did, we would see it.

I dont think anyone has tried to date.

yitz: I read Enable was moving away from Huawei core network?

This is in-progress for both Enable and UFF/TFF followed by a shift in the access network including a change in ONT being provided however the access side probably a long way away for both, UFF have announced Adtran as the core and access vendor IIRC and Enable have announced Cisco for the core, no announcement that I've seen for the access vendor although I've heard they are interested in using Nokia for some of it.

Both will be unlikely to replace the ONT's installed already as these should work fine with the new hardware but the OLT, etc is intended to be replaced as part of the overall process.

I've pretty much heard the same from the enable end but it's all been verbal so have nothing to back me up on this. There's no way they'll be replacing 150000 ONTs unless they have to though as there's not really any benefit to them to do this.

Ultimately they code the OLT to the ONT so if they don't match it doesn't work, even bringing in another Huawei ont won't work unless enable reprovision the service to it.
As other have said it will be going via Huawei equipment even if you could copy to a different ont. DFAS is the only exception but is exponentially more expensive option even at wholesale prices and really not worth it unless you need it for good reasons. Final alternative was to purchase an unbundled service that retailers can use whatever equipment they choose, but no retailer has actually signed up to offer that which would make it a bit tricky to purchase.

I've seen it once Brent - a couple of years ago another LFC got their wires crossed (literally and metaphorically???) and installed their ONT in a house that was in their LFC region, but also within a Chorus-built subdivision in that region (so outside their network footprint). Their tech connected their ONT up to the Chorus fixed fibre in the street but couldn't make it stand up.... I understand that once he realised what was going on he left the ONT in situ and abandoned the job.

That 'rogue' ONT was subsequently detected on the Chorus network but of course did not work. I'm not sure what the outcome was but I assume the misunderstanding was sorted out and a Chorus ONT was then correctly installed to provide service to that customer.

[EDIT: added clarification]

The views expressed by me are not necessarily those of my employer Chorus NZ Ltd

Not sure I heard it happen but I know there's definitely a house in Christchurch that has an enable and a chorus ONT installed. Can't remember the exact situation but the owner had two installs completed with a fibre for each one from both companies.

I've also heard of people moving regions and taking their ont and then wondering why it didn't work. It's probably more common in this scenario as to how you'd end up with a different networks equipment installed. Taking the ont when you move is surprisingly common.

Ask your ISP for an "NGN on Applicaton" quote via Chorus.

Be prepared to pay $10-$60k if urban.
