OMG reading this….: RSPs make pennies out of providing each broadband connection and you are screwing them for every last bit you can with “free this and that”

Since getting fibre in 2019 I have switched providers once.

Since getting my fibre connection in 2016 I have switched my ISP twice, once because I saved $600 on broadband, second because I saved $300 + saved on mobile plans and 12 month subscription.

I am not the marketers coming up with these incentives, so not sure why you are blaming a CONSUMER for these companies listing hundreds of million dollar profits when I have changed providers the exact same amount to years subscribed.

You know, this is how capitalism and competition is supposed to work, right?

Spark>Skinny>2Degrees not exactly poor unfortunate souls of the telco industry.

Have you invested in them on sharsies or something? Because that is the only reason I would understand people getting angry that I am taking them up on their DEALS designed to get more customers.

Otherwise I have been rather loyal to my ISPs like Paradise.net with my whole time on dial-up, World Xchange on ADSL and then Telecom on VDSL and FIBRE.

Last time I rang 2Degrees they offered me $15 off and Prime Video for a year.

My other option would’ve been Skinny if they hadn’t played ball. Have Skinny mobile so would qualify for $10 off there as well. If I went to Skinny I’d rather have their ISP modem so I know it is set up correctly and makes support calls easier, so would pay $5 a month for  first year. Would probably have to ring to join Skinny as when was trying web page it didn’t seem to let me select to have them supply modem.

2Degrees worked out a few more dollars a month but saved a lot of mucking about so for $5 to $7 around about wasn’t going to worry about it. They also answered the call in about 10 minutes, maybe I got lucky there.

I will worry about $30 difference a month though so will change if they offer nothing when this year is up.

You need to tick the 12 month contract, then you get the option for selecting if you will BYO your modem or let them provide it.

QQ was that $15 dollars off a total year membership or $15 per month off Prime Video?

Yeah, $5 a month not worth the hassle, but I would do it for the convenience of text chat support.

Thanks, I missed that. Tick 12 months then have option. Wasn’t filling it out fully was just looking out of curiosity.

$15 off each month bringing $97 down to $82 a month.

Then free Prime Video worth $8 a month meaning 2Degrees over all cost $74 a month.

I had Prime Video on before deal so the eight dollar saving was an actual eight dollar saving. I like Prime Video better than Netflix. Have more third party TV content and in my view make better originals. Less of them, but they hit the mark more often.

Good for you.....

Those "hundreds of millions of dollars" come from their commercial side of the business.

For example, Spark this will be the likes CCL, Qrious, Digital Island

Likewise, 2degrees as a Professional services Division, Managed Networks Division, and Cloud Security Division

Providing home broadband barely makes a profit, and if someone doesn't pay their bill, that connection is a loss...

Nah but I do have a Static IP address whitelisted everywhere which would be a pain to change, but not withstanding that I rather just stick with a provider that gives me good service rather than bouncing between providers every 12 months.

I do call up Sky once a year, when my contract is due and see what deals they can provide to resign for another 12 months but I have to call up and ask....

Service providers are barely breaking even as it stands and the primary input cost (Chorus) is going up not down. Don't expect any significant deals as there is no margin left that can be squeezed to provide this.

Here's a thought as we come to the end of summer, there must be many NZers who have migrated to the farthest reaches of the mobile data network who would have appreciated the opportunity to use high-speed broadband in these out-of-the-way places.  In many cases Chorus have deployed fibre but ISP's don't seem to offer any structured alternatives, short term summer only, data usage, etc.  Yes, you can find options of non-contract, non-termination fee but there must be an easier way.

@prevaljo perhaps best to start a new thread as that is going OT, howver several providers have no contract term plans which could be activated for a month or 2 at a holiday home.

Oh interesting, so they basically renewed your last deal including the 12 months free Prime? Did you get a discount for having your mobile with them too?

Yeah, I prefer Prime Video too, I find there have been very few Netflix productions of actual quality other than Stranger Things and a few of their earlier shows they made before they had to start supplying their own content, you also get Prime Gaming which is good if you play games and like Twitch Drops and monthly free games.

I think the general consensus with regards to your question is "no" and if anyone here from any of the providers does know, they're not going to be able to say anything anyway.

I would say you're best just to call around the providers and see what you can do/get, but my opinion is that you probably shouldn't get your hopes up.
