The only reason I have 900/500 rather than 300/100 is FOMO. I know I don't need it!
I have 300/100 and no problems with a household of four. The biggest difference for me was having a router that supports QoS (i.e. eliminating buffer bloat). Without that Netflix can saturate the connection for short periods of time. I was finding dropouts of a few hundred milliseconds annoying on video calls. But as long as the connection is shared fairly, in practice most individual use cases only need 10 MB/s or so, so no real need for gigabit.
i use hyperfibre with a wifi 7 mesh system at i live at a bandwidth-hungry household .. also hyperfibre due to fast upload speeds for work stuff..

If I am downloading large ISOs then 950/500 is quite nice
the rest of the time its unnecessary I could get away with Home Fiber Starter which is still ample for three people in the house all streaming different things

I previously had 100/20 and found the upload speed constraining, so I went to gigabit. When Chorus introduced the 300/100 service I probably "should" have moved to it because gigabit's a bit overkill, but at the same time it's nice for getting big downloads done quickly. I may change in the future if prices go up, but at the moment I'm happy with what I have.
Amusing how things have changed.... back in the BBS days it was "wow you have 56k ?" :D (which was bit of a gimmick anyway as most only supported 33.6k upload unless used with similar chipset modems and even then you'd be stretched to hit 40k on NZ lines)

There was nothing wrong with 14.2k.

900/500
Because in a multi person household there's not a single thing that causes degredation of service to others also using the internet at the same time

There was if you were running a BBS - the faster someone downloaded, the faster someone else got to connect :D
But yeah, I started out with a USR Courier 14.4k. Awesome unit. Anyway getting bit OT now ;)

I run server services for customers in my small office and am particularly interested in the upload speed. Normal private users (currently) hardly need more than 50Mb/s of simultaneous bandwidth per person for streaming and video conferencing. With 500Mb/s upload I can therefore provide services to 10 customers at the same time, but in fact significantly more, since not everyone needs the maximum bandwidth at the same time.

My bad, 14.4k not 14.2k.
Anyway, 935/515 here and is fast enough to be honest but 2G is tempting all the same. I think if the price gap dropped between 1G and 2G then it would become a no brainer.

So many ISOs !
I don't install linux everyday but there's always another ISO of something to download :-)

A torrent server is a good justification for 2G - all those Linux and BSD's ISO's.

Why do I own a car capable of 250kph when the average speed I do is probably 60kph?
... because I can. And because it's nice to know that while I may never really use it to its full potential, it's there if needed.
It would be more pragmatic to get some cheap little tuk-tuk that couldn't pull the skin off a custard, but where's the fun in that?
