Poll:

There appears to be DNS issues happening on multiple providers at the moment, Not nationwide but impacting Spark, Voyager, One that I've seen so far.

I can confirm that Voyager / 1st Domains is not affected although any customers might be if they have domain names with Crazy Domains. This seems to be isolated to Crazy Domains and their DNS infrastructure again. Of course any if you have your domains with Crazy Domains and they have DNS issues it will mean that websites and emails will be affected regardless of which ISP you are using.

I've seen other posters suggest not using the Registrar DNS and using Cloudflare. I'd just like to point out that if you have your domain name and DNS with 1st Domains, you get Cloudflare DNS automatically as we use Cloudflare Powered global Anycast network across 250+ cities for all domains on our DNS servers.

Its not just crazy domains. Its anyone who is part of their infrastructure as Dreamscape did a big buy up a couple of years ago so Discount domains, Free Parking and a bunch of others are all part of Crazy now. I used to use DD exclusively as I found I could ring up with an issue, speak to a competent human who'd fix it in seconds.  The change when they were sold was ring up, sit on hold, speak to someone who doesn't even know what a TTL is and hang up in anger and frustration.

Hey all. Just dropping a message from Voyager. We were alerted of an issue first thing this morning. On investigation we found that the return routing from Dreamscape Networks (AS38719) seemed to be broken. We shifted our outbound routing via multiple paths to see if anything seemed to work. All paths seem to break once traffic hit AS38719. There was also NZ Telco chat around this and everyone was in the same boat and seeing the same thing. We found that IPv4 was broken, but IPv6 was fine. We also found that Cloudflare seemed to be able to resolve domains, I'm wondering if they were caching beyond the TTL? Will post if I discover anything further.

Edit: It now seems to be working. Looks like there were an additional 2 hops inside AS38719 that were weren't seeing before.

Good to know Firebirdnz - Dreamscape aren't being at all forthcoming about even having an issue. Maybe they were making changes in a US timezone in the middle of the night forgetting there are other timezones in the world.

I was going to call Dreamscape but they specifically told me not to...

I'm with Freeparking and our sites were down for at least 4 hours this morning. From my ISP I couldn't even load up the Freeparking webpage. I phoned Freeparking many times and was just placed in the queue then automatically hung up on without talking to anyone. No mention of any issues on their status page, Facebook page or X.  Terrible communication and terrible service.

OMG... our client in Discount Domains went off air around 8.00pm this evening... WHY!???
DNS records for this client are in Azure, not with DD... so how is this happening???  Seems to happen about this time every year too I have noticed!

Just use metaname already and avoid all these bottom of the barrel providers

Also sadly Cloudflare Registrar still not supporting nz TLD after what 5 years...

It doesn’t actually matter where you register your domain. When you point your DNS elsewhere using glue records it updates the TLD DNS with where your domains DNS is actually pointed. so as long as you use a reliable DNS provider such as Cloudflare or AWS or something of the like (Or in reality any domain registrar that’s not a New Zealand one because they all seem to suck at it) then your registrar becomes irrelevant.

You definitely want to ensure your have reliable DNS but please don't lump all the NZ Registrars into the same bucket!

At 1st Domains we've invested heavily into our DNS and we actually leverage Cloudflare DNS for all domains hosted on our DNS. You'll notice that even though your domains are parked with 1st Domains, the records are all served from Cloudflare DNS servers. We have a number of our own DNS servers replicated around the world in the background that only Cloudflare access, and Cloudflare then cache and serve DNS from their edge. We've had this in place for a number of years now and Cloudflare has protected us and our domain customers from many attacks. We host over 100K domain names for New Zealand businesses, and I couldn't imagine doing it any other way. Not if you want to sleep at night!

Honestly I agree. I have had NZ domains with 1st domains and never had any issues, and you’re still my go to registrar for NZ domains. I just use Cloudflare DNS because it’s so good for $0.
I did plan on mentioning in my post above that I have had good experience with 1st domains, but ADHD took over and I forgot. But it’s genuinely true. I recommend it as the best NZ domain registrar.

Highlighted for truth. I agree with @net24lm. Even though I'm using a different, NZ-based registrar, lumping all services into one bucket is not fair. There are good local services available here.

Yep. You’re right. I overreacted there, and retract my statement (can’t edit my post).
Not that it’s an excuse but my place of work was SERIOUSLY burned by two NZ registrars having terrible DNS outages in the past 18 months.

I had issues with CD a few years ago and moved to Google domains - glad I did!

Although Google domains then sold to Squarespace which has been rock solid.
