Yes, I understand. I'm being sarcastic, as most of the people on some Facebook groups seem to always recommend Starlink over any other alternative, saying that's even better than fibre.

I wish I could still be on fibre :(
Starlink was a saviour as only other option for me is mobile internet, but yes, Starlink is inferior to fibre in every way.
The closest fibre to me is about 700m away and I checked to see what chances were of extending the network to my place, they wanted $50k just to scope it, I had set aside $20k to do it but not even close LOL!... This is where Starlink fills the gap.

And that's a good reason for being on Starlink. But Im referring to people who says Starlink is the better option, even when fibre is readily available or already installed.

Yes, there are misguided people out there.

Here in Golden Bay Starlink seems to have a lot more consistent speeds than fiber.  Even the cheap plan is 300 to 400Mbps all day long (only 40 to 50Mbps upload though).

As far as reliability goes, they have both gone down in the last month.  Fiber took a day to fix and Starlink took 3 hours or so.

Starlink has more consistent speeds than fibre?

As to outages, one involved a cable that required repair/replacement, whereas Starlink can just shunt another satellite into space, although I don't imagine that's very quick either. The redundancy on Starlink may be a bit better though.

A

I know a couple of people here with very underwhelming fiber connections that drop to 20 or 30 Mbps at times and even stall completely sometimes.  I don't know if it's a fault or a consequence of the way our area is connected.

I know lots of people on Starlink and all are very happy.  Ours has been rock solid until today.

I daresay that will be their-setup-related. Have any of them logged faults?

Either that or they're all on a poor ISP.

But a lot of Facebook people says Starlink is better than fibre...

Oh absolutely, I mean how could silly old fibre possibly compete with the wisdom of Facebook? After all, the rigorous peer-reviewed research conducted by “Karen from the local buy/sell group” has clearly shown that latency, stability, and gigabit speeds are overrated when you can strap a pizza dish to your roof and pray to Elon for a decent ping.

I too like to base all my infrastructure decisions on memes, vibes, and a steady stream of posts from people who just discovered speedtest.net yesterday. Fibre? Pfft. That’s so 2010.

Its 100% a proven fact by Facebook research And least we not forget the Facebook Science, that Starlink is better than Fibre lol.

In Reality it really amazes me how much people read on the Facebook and what the Believe!, I too see people recommend starlink over fibre and im just asking my self why are these people so Sheepish its like the Idiocracy  Movie starting to take effect!

I've told them to but haven't had an update.

I'm not saying starlink is better than fiber.  What I am saying is that me and 5 neighbors on our road have starlink (can't get fiber on our road) and we are all very impressed with the service from speed of delivery, ease of setup, connection speed and reliability.  Everyone else I've talked to in our greater area has similar positive feedback.

Some people with fiber are having problems and are having to piss around with support cases etc to get good performance.

This has lead to people posting things like "just get starlink and it will work perfectly straight away".  Perfectly understandable for Joe public who just want easy internet that works and don't give a shit about what is technically better.

If I could have fiber I would have it (even just to avoid supporting Musk) but having ended up with Starlink, I must admit that it's an amazing product and has exceeded my expectations.

I just did a speed test now on the $79 plan

That sounds like a dodgy ISP. Chorus run a congestion-free fibre network. Even if all 32 connections on the local GPON were fully saturating their connections, that would leave each connection with 75Mbps (GPON being 2.4Gbps). I’ve personally never seen a fibre connection drop below the advertised rate.

People say fibre isn’t as good as Starlink because they’re using crappy ISP-provided routers in towns/cities which have interference from other wifi networks, then they move to the country with no neighbours for miles, use Starlink, and think it’s a far superior product.

I wonder how many of them know what connects Starlinks base station north of Auckland to the internet????
