Moved MIL from 500/100 to 100/20 and very happy with results. Streaming, phone table and laptop. Some WiFi security cameras too.

Good to hear. Thanks.

@quickymart:

I expect it will be like chorus with the copper being taken when the fibre goes in. The little white box on the house is left in place, the hook is in place, just a cut wire from the white box and take the cable off the hook.

I doubt that will happen - unless some special arrangement is made, Chorus techs will not be allowed to touch Vodafone/One's cable network.

you completely missed what he was saying

They (One NZ contractor) will do the same as what Chorus contractors do when removing a copper connection. Remove the cable to the premises and leave everything else.

100mbit would be fine for you.  You'd only really notice the difference for very large downloads (e.g if you had a gaming console and were downloading a 100GB+ game etc)

I read it as "will the tech installing fibre remove the Vodafone/One cable line at the same time", to which my response was no, they wouldn't be able to.

Removing a copper line at the same time fibre is installed? Yes, both lines are on the Chorus network, so that one could happen.

That's what I read it as anyway.

I had fibre installed yesterday ordered on Saturday via their website a total of four days. Makes me laugh when one.nz say that the cable network will be shut down here in Stokes Valley by 8 December 2025. For a start where are they going to get all the installers immediately to install fibre.

I have always had the fastest a hangover from when our gaming sons still stripped our bank accounts. Next I review I will probably go down in speed. My physical restraints have meant I don’t game anymore (solitaire exempt). So our usage is streaming on one TV, occasionally on laptops or iPad, email, accounts, teams etc. I feel 500/100 will be ok, more than ok actually.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

For this kind of use you probably are ok with 100/20, unless you have backups going up constantly. As I mentioned, moved MIL to 100/20, a lot cheaper. She only uses streaming on TV, the occasional Spotify on Echo devices, plus a phone or tablet use. Save yourself some money.

@freitasm  @Linux  That is good to know, thanks for the sound advice. I have a while to go on my contract with Mercury unless I can downsize my plan without penalty.

The only reason I run above 100/20 personally is because I have a file server I transfer large files to and from frequently, and would miss the speed both ways. If it weren't for that server and the games I frequently delete and download, I'd be quite content on a 100/20 plan. I would have no concerns for the average user on a 100/20 plan, and the only ones I'd suggest something more substantial would be people doing content creation, remote work with large files, or individuals like myself.

I went down to 50/10 and saw no difference! And saw no difference at 100/20!

But, hey, seeing you can change back up again if you want, there is nothing to lose.

@MikeB4 Yes you should be able to down grade the speed with no penalty

Downgrading fibre is literally zero risk. If you find you are bottlenecked it’s a same day exercise to get upgraded back to faster plan. Your isp is always happy to upgrade your plan.

FWIW Mum moved from 500 to 100/20 and has had zero problems since we were there in August.

It seems we cannot downgrade during the contract period.
