MichaelNZ:

Speaking as someone who works at an ISP and actually does this process a bunch of times I allow for at least an hour to setup an internet account.

Pretty off-topic now but if it takes you an hour then perhaps you need to look into automation to reduce that time like other ISP's do...

Some of the wholesalers (we're talking 2degrees/Devoli etc) will charge one month connection as a setup fee, so that's probably where that comes from, but it's not a direct LSP charge.

Look, I don't know this ISP Faro, but in 2026 with all the website template makers and AI assistants, to have THAT as your website is kinda weird.

I've never heard of a $90 charge and we were one of the pilot sites for jetsteam, and have been deploying business and consumer internet since before then.

Are they that much cheaper than one of the other more well established providers?

Linux:

My eyes my eyes! They can't even get the date format correct for NZ they do MM/DD/YY

Ditto, I was very surprised to see that.

They appear to be related to or a subsidiary of BTIT Consulting Ltd https://btit.nz which appears to be operating from a residential property in Wellington per company office records.

Their website page https://status.faro.nz/ is not currently working, with my browser saying "The server at status.faro.nz is taking too long to respond." - not a good look.

Chorus only chage 1 month for business connections, not residential, they will also chage the transfer fee replace the existing conenction, but will not charg it to provision a new port.

While I can't speak re specific comercial arangements, I would highly recomend looking at the price list before negotiating with any wholesale provider.

saf:

Chorus’ bare wholesale pricing is publicly available: https://company.chorus.co.nz/about/contracts-and-agreements/ufb-service-agreements

It just gets worse the more I look at the Faro website.... their "shop" has a large advert for a bundle, yet when click on it, get "Not available".

Then this when looking at a residential Hyper connection....

Think their AI bot needs some work with basic math.

It seems we have already had a brief look at them last year:

A quick Google also shows a mirror or related site with a slight variation in name https://elfaro.nz/

So is that 8,000MB/s or 8,000Mb/s. There's a massive difference between the two, and an ISP of all companies should be able to get something as fundamental as that right.

MichaelNZ:Speaking as someone who works at an ISP and actually does this process a bunch of times I allow for at least an hour to setup an internet account. I will outline the major steps:

  1. Order circuit and wait for advise of vlan and circuit ID

  2. Issue IP addresses for IPv4 and IPv6

  3. Program radius once circuit ID is known

  4. Setup the following at our end: Client vlan interface and bridge, DHCP template, DHCP server, DHCPv6 server

  5. Unpack router and gain access

  6. Update router software and boot loader

  7. Configure router for client often including tweaks to suit their existing environment

  8. Order and print NZ Post label

  9. Pack router back up and send off

And this is the baseline which applies in the majority of cases. Obviously extras like VPN, multiple SSID's, or distributed wireless adds more time.

It would be very reasonable for an ISP to charge for basic setup especially with no term contract or other business.

I think the issue here is not costs to the ISP, but the fact that they told the customer that the fee 'goes straight to Chorus'. If that is they standard company line, then I'd stay well clear of them!

Faro is claiming this is a cost from Chorus they need to pass on to me.  Chorus deny this and have shown me their fee.  I have my own router, its already set to VLAN and DHCP so should automatically swap over when they change the provider.  I chose them as I need a static IP address.  Almost every provider charges an extra $10 to $17 a month extra for this.  It's free from Faro.

I'd be looking elsewhere if thats their attitude.

Static is one off fee with Quic.

I checked Quic out.  No mention of Static IP on their application form.  I emailed them, no response in over a week.  Ruled them out.
