Meanwhile you could try connecting through a gaming VPN provider and see whether that improves things, something like ExitLag, Mudfish.

Or you could ask Hotshot whether they can get a direct peering with Global Secure Layer ISP which they may or may not be able to do depending on their network size and presence.

Hotshot looks like just resold 2degrees it should be fine, this could be anything, router, local config, etc

For everyone saying "move ISP" what are you seeing wrong in those Traceroutes/Pings?

OP says he's on the South Island, so to get to Aussie in ~40ms seems about right to me? Ping from a router in Christchurch (some identifying info blurred)

Average ping time of ~36ms. About the same as the OPs.

I agree with nztim (great name, Tim, by the way, absolute champion name) that OP should look a bit more at router, anything else on their network, and perhaps work with ISP a bit more to see if you can rule something out. But I don't see anything that screams ISP issue in the provided details. Am I blind?

OP of course, you can always change ISP but I don't see any "ISP at fault" smoking gun there. Probably the biggest issue is the ~15ms RTT to hit 192.168.200.1 which I am going to _guess_ is the BNG/ISPs gateway. That to me implies the ISPs BNG/Gateway is in Auckland while the OP's in Christchurch, so probably a layer 2 circuit between those two points (i.e. no local BNG/router in Christchurch)

Based on those hops above Hotshot or the party who provide their network have a dedicated internet access through 2degrees and likely manage their own bandwidth pool as opposed to a resold layer 3 UFB tail which would be all you can eat from the 2degrees wholesale bandwidth pool (i.e. very much like Slingshot retail connection).

With some digging you can find that link net is associated with AS58610 Telnet Telecommunication Limited.

They use 2degrees as an upstream.

If it was ~40ms then that is fine. However, the OP has indicated this spikes all the way to 90ms and that is the killer. I would normally agree to look at the router but unfortunately this is actually behavior I've seen with Hotshot (Telnet) in the past and there appears to be something funky going on with their network.

I am also with hotshot in Christchurch and have been experiencing the same issue.

Every night from 8-10pm my ping jumps from ~40 to ~80.

I've spoken with hotshot support, they think it is an upstream issue.

I also have a traceroute comparison of when the issue occurs and when it does not, it looks like the route is the same, but the latency between one of hotshots devices and port.cpiak1-n2.callplus.net.nz increases by ~40ms

I've attached a smokeping log of almost 10 days, it's pretty clear there is a spike in ping every night, this has been going on for months.

I'm looking to move ISPs now too..

Well at least that pretty much confirms it's hotshot because yeah around that time every night the same thing happens
