Even those tests are not very useful because you have to take into account each person's sync speed, exchange congestion and who else at each persons place was downloading/uploading/using the net at the same time as the test was running.
The BGrade test only downloads from 4 international sources (stream, google, bgrade's host in the US and gamespy).
At the end of the day residential internet is shared network best effort, there are no gaurantees of speed at all.
Go with Orcon as stated before with no contract. This gives you an out to try Xnet if Orcon's performance is lacking. The contract with Xnet will give you one year to make up your own mind as the proof is in the eating.
I have been with Orcon for +- 7 months and have had no issues besides the initial setup when changing from Telecom to current. The things I like most is that my IP hasn't changed since the start and the no contract terms. I have changed my plans a few times with no hassles. The helpdesk is also quite friendly and helpful. Getting through to Telecom's helpdesk was pathetic on the few occassions that I tried. Unfortunately I have only used the 2 ISP's so I can't say much about any of the others. I will stay with Orcon for a while still:)

I still have my old Xtra email address in Outlook and still receive 'xtra' email but obviously unable to send from the that account.

Hi Kelburn Exchange is up on Upland road near the Grove Rd corner near the shops (as I remember could be mistaken). There are two cabinets toward the Northland end of the exchange coverage that wont be commisioned till April next year, however most of the Kelburn area itself should be covered well by Kelburn Exch.
As for email, get yourself a gmail or hotmail account and get those to check in on your old ISP pop accounts till they expire, will give you time to tell all your contacts of your new gmail account. Once with gmail or hotmail you are no longer tethered to an ISP for email.
