A note I would add in regards to latency, Woosh can make using Citrix quite painful, if this is a tool you require. Woosh works better with the modem rather than the PCMCIA card, however the PCMCIA does not require a power outlet.

I use woosh. only because now we dont have to have a phone line in my flat. so we pay $80 instead of $50+$70= $120. I find even with perfect quality/signal, still a little slow. If you still pay for a landline, i would recommend getting jetstream/start.

would the ping on woosh be better than dial up? sounds like a stupid question but everyone seems to be saying ping is very different to speed etc...

i play a little online now with dial up and for some games its ok, some its not possible.
i'm not really after fast paced fps just as long as it is decent.

also what about skype? will that work alright on woosh? ive even got my parents using it so it would be quite handy.

finally what about what lyon_rouge says about the pcmcia card... how is it worse than the modem?

We experimented with the external modem and the PCMCIA modem in different locations (CBD & suburbia) and found the external modem got a stronger signal, in some cases it got a connection where the PCMCIA could not.

The advantage of the PCMCIA is size and the fact that it does not need an external power supply.

I don't know about online games because I never play them. I do use Skype quite often however & that works great over Woosh. They audio delay is hardly noticable.

I also use VOIP Buster with Woosh and get good results with that as well.

PCMCIA card versions of modems can perform worse than external versions because of signal conditions.

Basically, with an external modem, the antenna/radio is typically placed away from any other electronic device, whereas a PCMCIA is lying right next to one (i.e. the laptop), which can affect the radio signal somewhat. Additionally, external modems typically have their antenna mounted as high as possible, whereas a PC card is almost lying on the ground.

I tried using skype with limited success on woosh. However I have since found that I had misconfigured my firewall which may have caused some of my issues - I haven't retried it since.

my understanding of the pcmcia card was that this came with an external ariel as well? if it doesn't then i would understand the difference :P

would there be anyway to test both from the location i was going to be using it from? would they let you swap the pcmcia for the external if it wasn't working?

The testing I performed was with the aerial supplied with PCMCIA card. I would imagine that Woosh would allow you to try with PCMCIA and swap if required. They are quite a co-operative and flexible organisation.

I am a big online gamer and I recommend Xtra Jetstream Adventure ADSL connection..
2MB speed (which is usually 1MB only) the best for gaming enthusiasts.

ADSL is far from the "best" for gaming enthusiasts, due in a large part to the 40-50ms latency that Telecom add on for Interleaving. TelstraClear cable probably offer the most consistent gaming ping with anything from 15-30ms.

Just finished a 30 minutes session on DoD, and my ping time to the Xtra server was 20ms, on TC...

Well getting back to the original question Woosh seem to have improved their service reliability lately. This year I've just has been 99% trouble free as far as my telephone service has gone.

The faster speeds on the Internet connect are great. No complaints so far this year.

I have been with Woosh since late October and, apart from the problems I had during the installation process, the service has always been very reliable for me. I get the occasional disconnect, but that happens less than once a week and I can always get straight back on, so I don't consider it a problem.
