Addressing people by their real names is deliberately provocative, as someone involved in the Internet Biz i'm sure you know this. Baiting much?

Unfortunately you've not exactly put your best foot forward. I need only refer folks to search for 'Hosting Direct' on the NZLUG archive as evidence of this. You claim to be vehemently anti-spam and simultaneously send the mailing list unsolicited commercial advertising of your products.

You also appear to be prone to exaguration.

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/BU1008/S00168/hosting-direct-announces-price-reductions-for-nz.htm

"Hosting Direct Ltd, a leading New Zealand ISP" - leading what exactly? Citations for any awards you've won or statistics showing you're bigger/faster/...?

Statements like "?Hosting Direct has always been New Zealand's most competitive hosting solutions provider." are obviously inflated, as you only started in 2005 and most of the major players in the industry have been around for a lot longer.

There's also some problematic feedback from customers and reviewers...

http://internet.geek.nz/11/nz-webhosting-not-good-enough/ [hyperlink removed, spyware on this site]

http://www.hostinghub.co.nz/hosting-direct-reviews.html

http://www.webhostingreviews.co.nz/web-hosts/40

It also seems the NZ PHPUG has had some critique to offer as well

http://groups.google.com/group/nzphpug/search?group=nzphpug&q=hosting+direct

Were I in you shoes i'd be concentrating on keeping your own nose clean and profile low until your business reputation speaks for itself. Unfortunately mishaps of 2007-2008 are still a bit too recent to consider them 'history'.

Oh and as a CEO you are probably best to exercise care in your approach to online correspondence, especially those which are archived in search engines for eternity. Oh and of course NZNOG, which has some of the NZ scenes harshest critics ready to let loose... oh that's right, you posted there this morning. :-)

My $0.02.

BJ.

Just a heads up, the first link - http://internet.geek.nz/11/nz-webhosting-not-good-enough/  has Malware attached to it, and I suggest you get it removed to avoid those Windows Users going there and getting infected.

On the plus side though, I found out my Debian Computer has a crapload of Trojans.

Heh, i never noticed as NoScript hid it all quite effectively.

Maybe a Moderator can remove the HREF link in the meantime.

Meanwhile i'll notify the DNC and registrar that the domain is registered in breach of their policies (non existant entity as the registrant name...) *eyeroll*

btw lol @ www.e97.com

Geekzone has never (so far) received a gag order from any company or individual.

We did have instances of users requesting discussions they initiated to be removed.

I always found it strange the threads complaining about Hosting Direct disappeared from GZ, I'm sure there was more than one.

I presume they are wholesaling through Orcon as they already colocate @ Orcon's data center?

Hi Jonathan Spence.
Can I see this gage order and threat of court action from Hosting Direct towards Geekzone?
Who told you that we gagged Geekzone? That's hilarious as this NEVER happened, whoever told you this is full of it, I doubt it came from Mauricio.
Where would one find this blog post?

Hi Ben,
I was referring to this post from Mauricio:
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/freitasm/7158

Correct me if I'm wrong but considering that this blog appeared around the time a whole bunch of threads about Hosting Direct and customer stories disappeared from Geekzone and because some of the previous activities I have heard Hosting Direct to indulge in, I came to the conclusion it was Hosting Direct.

It came up elsewhere too e.g. GPforums:
http://www.gpforums.co.nz/thread/384618/2/?s=

This could be completely another company so please correct me if I'm wrong, I will be happy to retract if this is the case. I also will be open to the fact that some of what I do in a professional capacity could be seen to be in competition with Hosting Direct. Please be assured, the intention of my posts is not to strike a competitive blow - in fact I often recommend to people other competitors with good reputations e.g. Web Drive, Sitehost etc.

Also thank you for clarifying you have your own data facility in Albany - I had heard from elsewhere that you colocated with Orcon. Congratulations on having your own facility and good luck in your endeavors to find "JV partners"

Thank You,
Jonathan Spence (Zeon)

I went to that link, and got that popup and page too. Does that mean I am infected? I have run Microsofts internet security software, but it hasn't picked up anything. What software is the best way to check for malware?

Not unless you downloaded and ran the exe it prompted you to run.

Here is my response to HostingDirect's private mail in case due to their banning they can't see it.

Hi,
Why haven't you posted your reply back yet publicly with your position and where you get your information about my company from?
Cheers
Ben

Hi Ben,
I was engaged this morning hence why I couldn't reply to your post. I have now replied in the thread but not sure if you will get it (or this email) due to your banning.

While some of what I do is competition with yourself, the reason I discredit your company is not to have a go at you - as mentioned I often recommend my own competitors as I simply am not interested in large numbers of clients.

Just a word of advice, it would be more conducive to your reputation to work with your critics rather than attack them. Probably the biggest marketing challenge for your business in the online sphere at least is your poor reputation, your current activities and strategy are not helping this.

Thanks,
Jonathan Spence

OK Cool, then I shouldn't be. Some of those websites can be  very tricky, and you can download things by simply pressing the close button on the popup box, as it is part of the website

For the record the registrar for internet.geek.nz are well onto it, if the registrant don't sort their stuff within 48 hours there'll be further action. Nice to see.

Looks like it is hosted by Media Temple, so they should be the ones to do something about it. I believe the registrar would only take action, if the registrant details are wrong, as all they do is manage the domains registration.
