Putting it like this... successive NZ governments have failed to understand the importance of wide-spread broadband uptake let alone good, fast network connections, for over a decade now. Meanwhile, the rest of the world hasn't. Europe and as you note, India, are miles ahead.

Does that answer your question about how qualifed our ministers are? I think it does.

I just got another call, from the same guy........ UNBELIEVABLE!!! I kept my cool this time (for the first 90% of the call), everytime i said i wasnt interested he said but you can try it for just a couple of months. Kept saying that over and over. If he rings again he's dead. though i think he got that message in the end

Whats the possiblity of complaining to Telecom that you are being harrassed by a certain caller?

I wonder if it will work.

I really think you should send this and proof to the NZ herald. the way they pick on and slander Telecom surely is illegal. Time for their turn to be made the mickey of.

you Fully miss the point of LLU.

Telecom were lucky enough to Inherit the Copper network when Rogder Douglas sold TCNZ as a SOE for 9 Billion dollars.

If NZ stays with 4 million people it will be uneconomic for any new player to enter themarket. probably ever. sadly.

I think it cost Telstra about 300 million to cover 60% of CHCH. New Zealanders are too spread out and we'd have to wait for
a decent wireless or satcom service Before there is any hope of competition.

last month Telecom put rentals up (again) about $3.

they have 1.400000 Affected homeline customers. do the maths 1.4m x 3 x 12 = over 500 000 000 pa.

not a bad payoff for a company that already made 916 000 000 PROFIT last year.

IF llu can go ahead Telecom would still recieve a payment from the other providers, ould still have the bulk of the customers
and would still own the asset base. However your average NZ'er would get a true choice of telco.

Imagine you have some one that makes 3 calls a week. of 2 minutes length. at the moment they pay telecom a Monthly rental (about $40) a wiring maintenence (optional / $2.50) and they use the line for 25 minutes a month?

how is that a free local call?

Now imagine there is competition. Most people have a land line for dial up or adsl, plus the odd phone call.
Imagine a plan with CHOICE!

200 minutes of Phone traffic and 50 hours of dial up for 29.95
or $10 a month rental + 20c a call locally...

with competition come choice.

with monopoly comes profit.

None of the companies is asking to have Telecoms customers, simply use of the Cable that the Govt laid 50 years ago.
If TCNZ has looked after it's customers then they'll stay with TCNZ.

If not they'll all leave.

Once there is a Choice people can decide for themselves, Like grown ups All Over The World can.

If I made that few local calls, I'd get a mobile and use that, it might cost me like $5 a month.

LLU would have been good once but no point now, that old copper is deprecated and will be replaced starting next year.

Rmember, most peole have alternatives, Mobile phone alone if you make hardly any calls, Woosh in auckland, Saturn in WLG and CHCH, and even Wired Country offered home phone though ihug for some time and the uptake was so pitiful they canned it!,,, how really can you say it works! Alternatives never really took off, people can't be bothered.

TelstraClear offer "Homeplan" which is exorbidant toll rates, 45c a minte peak (my 027 MOBILE is cheaper than that!!!!!) pretty well what Telecom charged 5 years ago in exchange for possibly cheaper line rental.. it's a have.

I must agree with the cheaper line rental and local call charging, Common in australia. There was a plan called homeline Economy, $25 a month and 20c per call, Same thing happened, Uptake was so low they discontinued it last year. (I was still on it till last month)
Peoples perception of "free" seems to work so well in NZ, "free" local call, "free" minutes on your mobile. see THIS POST for some shattered myths with high peak mobile users.

TCL Home line is a re-sold Telecom line.
45c/m is TElecoms peak rate for users not paying a higher rental rate to be on "Anytime".

TCL also offers a plan allowing cheaper day calls. a flat rate of $0.25 a minute. Capped call of $2.75 avaliable anytime.

or like a lot of people do you can use skype or Calling cards and reduce costs even further (like 5 c a minute nation wide )

Outside CHCH and Welly TCNZ Chage $8 more for hteir line charge.

Telstra Clear has something like 160000 homes in New Zealand, (with phone line only rental of 31.95) Telecom has 1.4 million on Homeline($37 or $45 depending on your town). the recent price rise only affected those customers and still netts teresa about 500 milion per annum.

does it seem strange to anyone else that the Price rise coincides with a Massive loss in Australia AND a fluctuating US Dollar?
after all the 52% majority shareholder is an american company - and they'll demand a profit - in American dollars. Our Telecom last year made a profit of 916 million New Zealand Pasoes , how much is that in US dollars?'

I know these figures as I hold some shares in TCNZ, I don't let my personal view of standover tactics stop me making money from them - That would be stupid.

It's my money and the fact I can now get 5 gig 2 mps both ways, Digital TV and 2 extra decoders AND toll calls to my mother at 8 cents a minute - 40 cents to New Zealand mobile phones ALL for about $40 less than thru combining Telecom and Sky (exclusive of any "special offers") Means I'm quite happy not living somewhere where there's No Competition - and I feel a wee bit sorry for anyone that hasn't researched How Local Loop unbundling would Benefit All new Zealanders

Telecom would Still get a Levy from companies usin ghte Loop - It would mean a fixed cost to the other company, instead of having to pay Telecoms customers Line Rental, then makes your offer revolve around toll calls or internet.

OOH what more do you know of that cheaper homline rental, our homeline is uselss, the volume on it is unusable to use for phonecalls and all the cables are totally stuffed so Telecom can't fix it. It's going to be disused shortly as VoIP will replace it , but... you have to have a homeline for DSL and wired country is not an option as we aore outside coverage :-(

I'm installing Asterisk as we speak, probaly go the on top of linix option, Astrisk @ home does not seem to work too well sometime according to a friend. going to run it on my old Twin P-Pro server called Hal9000 and have made this box to kinda be faithful to the original from the movie (you'll see on blog post soon)

Lots of learnings I know my way around linux but little more.

back to work monday :-\

Checked with Telecom and they say... the Homeline Economy plan is no longer available for customers. Existing customers on the plan pay $27.08/month, with calls being charged at 20c for up to two hours (40c for up to 4 hours, 60c for up to six hours, etc). National and international toll calls as per other plans.

I ranted a bit about it in me Geekzone blog actually...

opps I think I have a sticky key here somewhere, (re double post)

the way around the (Lack of) economy plan not being avaliable would be to register your Home line under your parents or grandparents name. they don't even need to live there.

then add a toll barr. then do your toll calling using Mobiles, call cards or another tolls provider (telstra / call plus / z talk my pick would be z talk... 15 minutes to anywhere in NZ for 99c, 59c/m to Mobiles.)

the person needs to be Over 60 to qualify for a 60's economy line - as listed in the Recent TCNZ "we're putting your price up" newsletter.

the thing that AMAZED me was that this letter LISTED all the prices, In Welly and CHCH and Out of Welly and Chch.

Imagine living in a non serviced area in Chch and not being able to recieve the plan Listed In Your Bill!

you'd think that
A) NZ would have noticed and said something about how much more they pay
or
B) to avoid heart ache and Possible stirring that TCNZ could have produced Two copies - one for The higher and one for the lower priced areas.

Otherwise they are just so damned Cockey.

and what ever you do Don't PAy a Wiring Maintenence or Phone Rental!
