Thanks! I didn't know about this speed test in New Zealand. It gives a nice picture for me (ok, off-topic, I am not on Telecom DSL):

Although this can be terribly inaccurate - this is after a complete manual clearing of the cache - I get the same whether I use Firefox or IE7.

Yeah I get that a lot too with the jetstreamgames.co.nz/speed test it only clears if I restart the machine!

i quite like using a lot of the speed tests from this site as many of them also provide upload speeds also

i find the NZDSL speed test really up and down, it can sometimes show my speed as being really slow even when i know it isn't (from running downloads either side of doing the test)

Your line speed is approximately 257295 Kbps or 31531.3 K bytes/sec

I've given up trying to work out my speed, my router lists the new profile
Connection rate4288 Kbps160 Kbps
but when I actually download things I am only getting about 280kbps at the moment.

I think they are phasing existing customers in throughout the month

Yep they are. But if you've changed from a plan to another (which I did) or you are a new customer, you will be upgraded within 24 hours, which is what happened with me :-)
