I know that feeling. Happens to me all the time.

In terms of My Sky, yes I think the steep sucker*oops*'Install' fee is a bit too steep.

So it's not a cash cow. Just common business sense.

What are PVR's?

My uncle is a Sky technician, all i know is that you don't own them, you just pay $599 to get them installed.

Personally, i think a DVD recorder with a hard drive is much better. My Sky limits you with what you can do, for example, if you record a movie from the pay per view channels, it only stays on your hard drive for 7 days and then gets deleted. If you had a DVD recorder, this wouldn't happen. Also, when sky goes down, or you have a lose of signil, you can't watch any shows that are stored on your My Sky hard drive...... ALSO, my sky is only a hard drive, you can't record onto a disc and watch it on another tv like a DVD recorder can do.

To sum up, your better off spending $599 on a dvd recorder with hard drive, at least then you get to keep it and you have more control over what you record.

Problem with DVD Recorders is that they dont have the Sky EPG (Electronic Program Guide) stuff built in.

This is workable (although more complicated) if you are just recording from 1 Sky channel, but say I want to go out for dinner and record something on Sky1 at 7 and then a movie on Sky Movies at 9 then it wont work because the DVD recorder can't change the sky channel.

But media centre PC's can change channel.

MySky is fancy but realistically it's not your decoder, it's theirs, they charge you for it and you still have to give it back though as the satellite outage proved, they won't run standalone anyway, but as least for first time users whom are prepared to pay the dosh, it works and is easy to operate.

Woosh often offer a $50 connection for students and earlier this year they had a stall up at Vic Uni with free connection packs. Got one myself :)
